(this reflective post as i have no desire to start writing a book)
I love a good “coffee table book”. They normally accompany the aforementioned living room affixture with my coffee and yoyos on weekend mornings. This book is great, and I am first and foremost thankful to Doc lucky who sold me this book along with the periodic table of yoyos In Cleveland at worlds for a discounted price because I was short on cash. This book gets my juices flowing and i gotta ask- what would a (21st century) book entail?
for context: This book covers 100 years-ish of yoyos and is a fantastic history of yoyos; I myself learned that whirligig was patented in the city I actually live in (November 20, 1866 to James L. Haven and Charles Hettrick, of Cincinnati, Ohio). The rabbit hole goes deep with this stuff and it never ceases to surprise and amaze. Its amazing to read the history, but the names I am familiar with are barely present in this text, like Yoyojam and Caribou Lodge for examples. They actually are out here making the simple amazing.
It’s now 2025. We obviously cannot have an accurate retrospective of the quarter century we are in, but it is kind of interesting to be on the tail end of some sort of chapter- I’m not sure what it is, but it just sort of hit me that the wheel of time has kept turning that this book covered and we will need a new one some day. I won’t write it, I don’t have resources, time, money, etc. but what chapters do you daydream of reading in such a book one day? We already have several fantastic retrospective documentaries on YouTube about things dedicated to “specific models of yoyos”, “the rise and fall of yoyo manufacturer” to the impacts of specific players and their styles, and even groups of influential yoyoers
What questions would you have for yoyo historians from 2000-2025?
What stories are we at risk of losing? Is there any lore that matters to you? What pictures would you think should be in a photo album of yoyo?
(side note, if someone else wants to make this big picture coffee table book about 2000-2025 yoyos let me know lol ill buy the first copy)
