Had a yo-mergency this morning… I could not find my pano no matter what and I was about to drive back home from my parents house for the next 4 months! Luckily I found it at the last second but that would have been a really sad way to lose this challenge…
Phew!
I’d have sent you my Lumayo light up yoyo lol. Vibes really bad but it sure does put on a show lol
i have officially failed =[, Atmos Tide came in and I couldnt resist lol
Well at least that’s a good reason to fail.
Halfway through the first month! I’ve been staying strong. Looking forward to writing my review of the Pano as I’ve been using it for a while now and I got a few things I wanna say about it.
My plan is to start looking for a yoyo to trade now. I’ll be using a fixed axel for February so hopefully I can retain value with a good trade. But we have to see what I get next month!
Also @Sven finalized a design for the yeara challenge, I’ve attached it below. It looks amazing!
Thanks for the nice words, Andrew. I am happy to contribute. It’s gonna be interesting to see how your run will go.
Def recommend asking for a wood fixie valued in 60 range that holds value
All I got fixie wise is a 3d printed fixie, not worth anything
Might wanna consider skipping fixed axle feb if you don’t get a good trade offer.
I’m doing FAF with my @TryCatchThrow 3D printed Cardigan. Amazing fixie for a great price. His Pixie is a bit less, and still a great throw.
He makes some awesome throws and sells em at cost which is so cool, but it would make it hard for this challenge as far as trades go
i’ll do this with you if you want
I have to mail 4 packages tomorrow, or I’d do it now, but def down in the future
Edit: Replied instead of sending DM, shooting you a msg now about possibly trading
Alright. Today was the final day I could use my Panorama before the next month begins. Here’s what I have to say about it.
This throw has been my EDC for the past 4 months, Its extremely pocketable and I’ve taken it to work with me many times with no issues. It has a certain charm to it when in use, I think a part of it has to do with it’s shape and magical weight distribution, I’m not sure. All I know is that whenever it hits my hand on a bind, I almost always get the urge to throw it right away again. It’s great for regens, I love the shape, I love side effects, the splash is fantastic. But this yoyo is not perfect.
Despite my love for One Drop, I’ve never been a fan of the pyramatte finish, especially when my hands get sweaty. The thin shape is pocketable, but it makes hitting certain tricks a little frusterating. The rounded shape also makes landing some whip tricks difficult. For the past 4 months, I’ve basically been unable to do horizontal with this yoyo, which is fine cause I’m not that good at it anyways.
Despite all this, the Panorama has a certain charm to it that makes it easily one of my favorite throws that I’ve ever used. I think the few flaws it has is part of that charm. It’s easily my favorite One Drop.
I’ve decided that I will rank all 12 throws in order of my personal enjoyment as I acquire them. Right now we only have the Pano, so the list looks like this:
- OD Panorama
I’ve got a fixed axel coming in the mail soon, so I’ll be ready for Fixie February! I’ll post in here when it arrives. Thanks for reading!
What Fixie you throwing this Month!?!?!?!?
So unfortunately my fixed axel never came in the mail this month. I was supposed to get a spin worthy dead horse from a friend but they forgot to ship it. That’s okay! Moving on!
This month I have an OD Parlay! Looking forward to writing my thoughts on this one, so far I am already really enjoying it.
Well it’s been one month with the Parlay and I gotta say, it’s tough to tell which yoyo I enjoyed more.
This throw keeps the comfort and general vibe of the panorama but increases the width, making tricks a lot more consistent. Still, it isn’t so wide as to be unpocketable. I also found that it’s pretty good for thumb grinds.
I learned a bunch of new tricks during my time with this yoyo, and the increased width allowed me to get a lot more consistent with tricks I already knew. (Looking at you, beef hook.) However I found that I struggled to go quickly with this yoyo. It didn’t seem able to keep up with my faster combos. But for a more relaxed and chill throw session, this yoyo is going to serve you very well.
Now thinking it about it objectively, this yoyo should be an improvement over the panorama in every way. However looking back on it, for whatever reason I would rather throw the panorama 99% of the time over the parlay. I think this is due to the imperfection of the panorama, perhaps that is what gives it its charm that I enjoy so much. It’s hard to say, but here is the updated list for the month.
- OD Panorama
- OD Parlay
- Spinworthy Dead ‘Orse (MIA)
For April, I purchased a OD x SFyoyos SK. This one has been on my wishlist for a while now, and I’m excited to finally throw this yoyo tomorrow!
Well it’s been a month, and it’s time to say goodbye to the SK. I’ve really enjoyed my time with this yoyo but the challenge must go on!
I’ve thrown lots of One Drops throughout the years but this one is easily my favorite. It feels nothing like any other throw that they’ve made, owing to the bead blasted finish (which I much prefer over the pyramatte) and the finger spin hub. In fact I think this might be the only One Drop Yoyo with a finger spin hub. Someone correct me if I’m wrong tho.
I had a good time practicing the occasional finger spin trick and being able to finally do horizontal again after nearly half a year. This is a great yoyo and I predict it’ll end up back in my collection sometime next year when I’m done with this challenge. But how did it play?
Coming off the Parlay and the Panorama, this throw felt different as soon as it hit the end of the string. It felt noticeably heavier, yet I was still able to kick it into high gear with speed combos. The surface was great for finger grinds, though it didn’t have a lip for thumb grinds and the aggressive shape made it a little awkward for palm grinds. Also, I’m unsure if this was a manufacturing error or intentional, but there was a very very tiny spike of aluminum in the middle of the finger spin hub. It didn’t affect play and I don’t really care that much, but this may put off someone who is pickier about how their finger spin hubs look.
Overall, this is by far my favorite One Drop I’ve thrown and my favorite yoyo this year, putting it at the top of our list. Here is the updated list:
- OD x SF SK
- OD Panorama
- OD Parlay
- SW Dead ‘Orse
Next up we have a OD Ranier fitted with a counterweight for 5a May. (I swear the next yoyo won’t be a One Drop )
Thanks to everyone who continues to read and like these posts as I make them. This has become a fun thing for me to look forward to writing every month. Hopefully by the end of the year I will have gotten significantly better at both yo-yoing and yoyo reviewing. I’ll do my best to stick with this habit! Cya guys next month!
Wow I can’t believe it’s been a month already. Let’s talk about the Rainier.
I originally planned on this being my 5a May throw. 5a May last year is actually what brought me back into yo-yoing, so I was looking forward to brushing up on my 5a once again. But something about this yoyo felt wrong for 5a. It felt too slow and floaty to be consistent with my counterweight tricks. So about a week in to the month I took it off. And my opinion of the yoyo improved dramatically.
This is by far the widest yoyo I’ve thrown this year so far. Actually it’s one of the wider yo-yos I’ve thrown in general. This yoyo is sort of a successor to the One Drop Cascade, and I can definitely feel the similarities. Only whenever I threw the cascade, I always felt like it was missing something, though I wasn’t sure what it was.
The Rainier had what the Cascade lacked for me. More rim weight, more power, wider and more stable. All the marketing buzzwords held true for this yoyo. And while I miss the bead blasted finish and finger spin hub of the SK, this throw had a comfy shape that felt nice to hold and was fantastic for finger grinds as well as a deep lip for thumb grinds. And with most of my side effect yo-yos, I put a pair of spikes on it so I could do easy pull starts.
Overall this was a very fun yoyo, and while it wasn’t my favorite this year, it’s still a solid throw to have in your rotation. ALSO I finally had the opportunity to throw that Spinworthy Dead ‘Orse, and I can confidently say that it has earned its spot in last place on my list. Maybe I’m spoiled by the newer yo-yos but I just didn’t find the wooden fixed axel to be enjoyable to throw in any way, even after learning a few fixie tricks. So yeah here is the updated list:
- OD x SF SK
- OD Panorama
- OD Parlay
- OD Rainier
- SW Dead ‘Orse
For June I picked up the absolutely gorgeous Sengoku Bishamonten.
This is probably the best looking Yoyo I’ve owned, and I’m hoping that it plays as well as it looks. I’ll see you guys in a month!
Love how unique the Bishamonten is. Definitely has some awesome colorways as well. Let me know what you think!
