Yoyos in pop culture

Goemon is such a good series. You should play the N64 ones at some point if you ever get a chance.

If games are on the table, one of my favorites is Bridget in Guilty Gear XX. Everything in his moveset is based around what feels like THP era looping/string tricks.

I am definitely looking forward to continuing the series. And also wished I could be better at fighting games like GG and MvC. They always have the best sprites!

Pink Panther throws down starting around 38 seconds into this video.

It’s in one other episode with Argyle (pizza dude). It’s a real weird inclusion, because the sound is off (to my ears) and in the two scenes I’ve seen, he’s throwing it behind someone or something. I feel like they didn’t want the actor to actually throw a yo-yo, and they also didn’t want to fully CG the thing.

This is a really good one the guy that choreographed this definitely lurks on this forum

Season 4 episode 7 of My Name is Earl ā€œQuit your Sntichinā€ episode.

Believe it was a Duncan Profly in the Snitch reward drawer at the police station

I need to watch this movie! I saw The Pirates and The Adventurers which I think are both from Korea and they were awesome, lots of great ridiculous action but with a good story and interesting characters. So I’ve got a soft spot for these types of films for sure.

I spotted this one while watching the 2017 movie ā€œLifeā€. I couldn’t find any YouTube clips, so here’s some zero gravity throwing with Jake Gyllenhaal haha:

For those curious, it was shown around 17:44 into the movie and this screenshot was taken about 30 seconds later during a flashback.

A friend of mine shared some exciting yoyo news with me last night, there’s a new character to Guilty Gear that was just released that also features a yoyo in her fighting arsenal. A little cringe worthy since it’s used as a weapon, though I did genuinely love seeing a subtle nod to walk the dog when the character walked around:

This news could also fall in our video game thread.

What’s so cringeworthy about this? Anything can be a weapon in a fantasy setting.

I just find it comical continuing to see our hobby misrepresented.

At the end of the day I’m glad it’s there for more exposure to our hobby, but it does further reinforce a commonly misunderstood myth about the history of yoyo. I’d feel the same way seeing cds used as throwing weapons or using kendama like a nun chuck!

That’s super cool! I’m ecstatic to try the game out for the first time as my friend already has it, so we’ll see if there’s any other yoyo Easter eggs for the character’s move list.

Bridget is not a new character either. She was introduced in the 3rd game, Guilty Gear XX back in 2002
