Someone (not me I swear lol) made a change.org petition to get yoyo into the Olympics so yo yyef ! let’s do what we can and add our voices to this petition and get yoyo some visibility!
[Petition · Add Yo-Yoing to the Olympics - United States · Change.org](https://Olympic Petition)
A very short think…. No
I believe the exposure would not lead to positive things for the community and would require the current powers that be to give up control in away most would not want to do.
It would feel like a simple clean rush in the beginning but shortly it would feel like Peruvian weekend Monday morning at work crash.
I will watch if it happens hope your vision is more informed and positive than my own limited experience with these type of things.
I am going to go out side and set up my cardboard.
Ain’t no way having more people interested and excited about yoyo would hurt the yoyo community lol this is gatekeeping.
The “powers that be” wouldn’t need to do anything? Why would yoyo at the Olympics need to be affiliated with the iyyf at all? They still hold international championships for a ton of sports when the Olympics happen bc they are separate events run by separate organizations (if the iyyf is who you’re thinking about). All that’s needed is players to compete, judges, and commentators. Gentry in the booth would be fantastic like I really don’t understand why anyone that loves yoyoing and yoyos would not want this to happen, except to gatekeep and that is lame.
At least you’re aware you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Breakdancing
I will see you in the Olympics then?
Yes! I’m all for more interest in the hobby. Anyone saying more people = bad are not helping keep the community alive.
Wow I am excited to be the new villain of the forum.
You guys have me pegged I try and keep as many people out of throwing as possible. Every day I am smashing yo-yos and cutting strings.
I apologize for triggering you with an honest opinion about your ideas.
It is good to have many ideas only a few come to fruition, thank you for helping me with the idea of being more villainous.
Cleaned it up a bit
Breakdancing’s subjective scoring is part of why it isn’t returning in the next Olympics, and probably puts this out of the question
Way more direct than I was… my bad.
I was trying not to call out the Olympic failure as to not trigger the breakdancing diaspora. In doing so I upset and triggered the yo-yo diaspora.
Exile for me, all by my self, all my self
I signed the petition. I think Gentry’s argument is pretty sound too. I don’t think the yo-yoing has a chance with the current flop of breakdancing, (edit: okay probably not fair to say that it flopped, I was just referencing that it’s not coming back for 2028) but I would be interested in how it would be adapted, or if it would be. My question is what changes should be made to the current competition style to differentiate it from worlds?
Ideas:
*prelims routine that are 30 seconds
*top 32 are made into a bracket, and the one seed is paired with the 32 seed, they do a yoyo trick off, like a rap battle, that is scored normally, but the kicker is they both agree upon a song from a set list to play in the background
*Final 8 do a 2 minute routine.
Yes, my ideas are probably bad for many reasons because of the scoring style, but I would want to set it apart from worlds so that worlds would still be a huge and fun yoyo party, I don’t see the Olympics becoming a yoyo meet.
But what other variety do you think would be cool to see that would be unique to the Olympics?
There is a long history of sports rotating in and out of olympic games and that is part of the olympics (did you know Tug of War used to be an olympic sport?!?). Each games has core sports that must be included and then optional (temporary) sports included on a per-games basis. In 2016, Sport Climbing, Karate, Softball/Baseball, Surfing, and Skateboarding were added as optional sports and now Surfing, Skateboarding, and Sport Climbing are part of the Olympics core sports.
Breaking was originally added “as part of an effort to draw more interest from young people in the Olympics”, IOC president Thomas Bach. Breaking was also a success for the Olympics as it brought interest and viewers to the games. The sentiment that Breaking was unsuccessful for the Olympics is inaccurate. The sports for LA 2028 were decided before they knew how successful Breaking would be and Breaking will likely be back for the 2032 games in Brisbane.
Skateboarding is an example of a sport being tried out and achieving an increase of new and returning viewers. Skateboarding getting added as an olympic sport also didn’t hurt skateboarding at all and helped to increase interest for the sport/art form/ mode of transportation.
All the logistics of actually making this happen could be ironed out. I am surprised by how much resistance there is to the idea from the yoyo community.
I do think there should be events for the 5 Divisions currently in worlds, but there could definitely be some changes made to the current worlds rules that might help make the events more exciting for viewers. Shortening finals might be an idea to consider. An alternate rule set could also be good potentially and I personally would like to see yoyo trying out more rule sets generally. Some blend of Difficulty (reward higher difficulty), Vocabulary (variety is rewarded and repeats penalized), Execution (how good does the player make the tricks look), Musicality (how well the players choreograph their routine to music; cues and also expression like do the vibes match), Originality (how much the players make their tricks feel unique and original to themselves as a way to encourage diverse tricks and routines). Just some brainstorming.
I also love the idea of a battle tournament and think that would be awesome and exciting!
Interesting, I guess I didn’t realize breaking was considered a success. Good point about tug of war. I honestly don’t watch the Olympics, I’m not the most interested in watching sports in general. Just doesn’t appeal to me, unless I’m with a group of friends.
ice skating, ice dancing, gymnastics, and diving all have subjective scoring systems and they do just fine
What is the athletic aspect of yo-yo again?
I am still struggling with the idea of Golf being an Olympic ‘sport’.
Table tennis and YoYo’s feel like they are similar in athleticism
Have you watched any yoyo contests? It is very athletic. More athletic than shooting or archery and those are in the olympics. Competitors need co-ordination and dexterity.
Yoyoing is so athletic that some competitors even remove their shoes to move faster
Same reason they don’t wear shoes in gymnastics
Yes I have watched many competitions. If that is what you define as athletic, then I think we can agree to disagree.
Not wearing shoes hardly makes you move faster. I think any actual athlete that plays on grass wearing spikes will tell you that. Baseball players wear metal spikes to grip the infield dirt as they move. You do not wear shoes during gymnastics because they get in the way. Gymnasts land on padded mats. Shoes would just make you more unstable.
How about the marksmanship aspect of the Olympics, would YoYo be on the same level as that, in your opinion?
