Yo-yo Hot Takes

this is just truth sadly.

Fyi, this is actually a backronym. The term meta predates this but your general point still stands and I agree.

They can be cool. No hot take here!

Thicker yoyo string is inconsequential on performance and actually thinner string (before getting too thin to reliabley bind) is more beneficial as it creates less drag.

The only real benefit to thicker string, outside of personal preference, is for audience visibility. If slacks and whips are difficult to perform on a string so you feel you need to go thicker, this is mostly because the material used/composition of the string is not ideal.

Your 1a setup is way way less consequential than your actual skill. The YoYo you use largely doesn’t matter, and dropping anything more than $25-$50 is a waste.

half the hobby is collecting trinkets and baubles

Counterpoint:
Thick string feels better in the hand.

This is what my company i work at would call a hard truth, not a hot take

i think green triangle might actually be the worst way to end a trick in most cases. i think a lot of people get the idea in their head that green triangle is THE trick ending, so it’s the first thing they look to do when they wanna end their trick. in doing so they often end up with a much more predictable and less interesting trick ending than if they would have tried to find something more unique. not all green triangles are bad though, some of them are really good and unexpected and make me go “woa“

tldr: green triangles are cliche and we gotta stop using them so much

Wider yoyos are not better, your skill/accuracy just needs a little improvement.

Yeah, that doesn’t change the fact that OD yoyos are dope as all get out. Know what I know doesn’t mean they’re not cool

Lol yeah, probably. That’s a cool collection. I plan to limit myself to 2 models per brand. That still leaves a lot of brands, though

One is salmon fade not red

If two reds look the same → they’re the same

If two reds look different → they’re the same but there must be different lighting

Therefore you are always right?

Yes, and I won’t say I haven’t partaken in this, but at the very least it’s not the entire hobby.

That’s why I gravitate towards hobbies that have some sort of skill expression, because when they don’t it’s completely just collecting.

With yo-yos or other hobbies involving developing an actual skill, at least we have a choice in how we approach things.

I honestly think the further competition yo-yoing developed into this weird optimized strictly for an imperfect (by nature of the activity) scoring system, the more discussion around the hobby moved towards collecting and kind of split the scene into forum types or short form video content types.

In the past there wasn’t really the same divide in what yo-yoing looked like in general vs contest routines. As a result there were so many more interesting trick videos where you could kind of figure out what they were doing with no tutorial needed, and it looked a lot more like what the average yoyoer was doing just better.

Preach it brother!!!

aren’t you admitting that they’re better in this reply though lol? i don’t even like wide yoyos but if you need less skill/accuracy to hit your tricks on them they are definitely better

A lot of very very good players have big collections. Once you yoyo for long enough they just kinda add up and selling them becomes more effort than it’s worth. Especially if a friend or player you like gets a new signature yoyo you wanna support, there’s just a lot of reasons to get “just one more” the longer you’re in the hobby.

Mad respect though to anybody who can actually keep and maintain a very small collection though.

As someone who studied color theory they are not the same and 4 years of art school

My hot take is summits are a dime a dozen people just hoard them
