At Florida States i decided to have a little fun with the X Division and do all four styles of play in one freestyle. I’m mediocre at very best at all the styles so i didn’t expect a great score, but i definitely noticed that there is a competitive disadvantage to doing more than one style of play in an X Division. Simply changing from 3a yoyos to a 4a yoyo is an automatic 6 point deduction. Add in the weighting of scores based on style of play and it really becomes nearly impossible to accurately score a player doing multiple styles of play.
This probably doesn’t come up in contests very often but the rule clearly states “The players discards the yo-yo they are using for any reason” - the rule clarifies that you could add a yoyo to the performance but you can’t take one away, which now makes sense that soloham is only done at the end of 4a freestyles.
Contest organizers need to either discourage or disallow multiple play styles in X Division, or we need to figure out some sort of rule modification for these multi-discipline divisions.
To be clear, I’m not upset with my results, i expected a last place finish. I also don’t think anyone would attempt what i did in serious manner, but it could be an issue if someone maybe just does some 3a and 5a in a performance.
I mean obviously the discard rule is to penalize players that get knots and swap a yoyo. If your swapping styles outright idk I could see someone abusing that though. Probably easier to just clarify that swapping styles like switching from 2a to 3a would result in a penalty.
I can also see this all being super niche as most don’t multi discipline and even then they don’t make a multi style routine
First off congrats on getting back on the stage, but yeah what Nathan said. Not only is it a discard issue but the scores are normalized based on the style to make it balanced based on what style the competitor is doing. The over 40 division uses the same rules and I had a lot of questions about it when I was gearing up for competitions.

Note for anyone who does more than one x div style also as per information I found from a NYYL head. You are allowed to enter multiple times in an X division if you’re doing a different x div each time
X division mean one style per performance. If you want to compete 3A and 5A then you will have to register for 2 and have different routine for that specific style each time on stage.
@JeiCheetah this is useful information for sure, probably more useful if you didn’t have to ask someone and it was written down - maybe other contests do state this tidbit on their respective websites but i don’t see anything specific on the FL states site or the NYYL rules relating to X Division.
@Nathan - is this your opinion on the X Division or is this a rule, i believe you to be an authority on judging and NYYL rules.
Once again, I’m not upset about my personal outcome here, I’m just noticing that the NYYL should probably clarify this a little better since X Division seems to be pretty standard now at state level and some regional contests.
