Wood axel issues

So I love wood and wood transaxels. There’s a feel about them that just seem right.

I have a yyf legend wing that I’ve had for a while and over time the yoyo axel had started to develop a rut or groove on the edge near one side which has resulted in lots of responsive and unpredictable behavior.

I’ve seen some who have drilled or pulled apart and replaced the axel but before I go that route is there anything that is mildly less destructive I could do?

I’ve swapped the string but my only thought was maybe using something to create a new groove in the middle.

So you can rub a little trench in the middle, when i get a new wood yoyo, now i use a peice of brass rod thats 2.2 mm and rub the axle with a little pressure to make the trench before i start playing to avoid what you are experiencing. String will stay centered and burn in.
