That is one way for me to hide a new purchase from my wife, all she would see is sushi
Two first run Chiefs, and yes there was a first run Minty Mint.
One of my favorite iterations of the Chief.
Man, this Wizard looks huge compared to that Nitro
It kind of is - oversized vs. undersized.
Edit to add: I’ve always liked the Nitro except for the size – I generally prefer mid-to-large sized yoyos. The Wizard captures a lot of what I like: the organic profile, the simple cup, tapped axle etc. in a size I prefer. Its way bigger, than the Nitro, but to me just feels a little larger than standard. I.e. I don’t feel like I have to do anything to accommodate the size in play.
Thanks for your thoughts. I‘m kinda on the fence when it comes to the Wizard because I usually prefer mid- and undersized throws. That being said I love my Big Bang which definitely is oversized but doesn’t feel like it on the string. The Pomelo on the other hand does feel exactly how it looks…huuuuge.
I haven’t tried the Pomelo, but I have a Balloon and a Sasquatch 2022. Between the huge size and disproportionately low weight, the play characteristics of those two really stand out. I haven’t played them in a while, so I don’t think that they are influencing my opinion of the Wizard.
Other than the size, I think the Wizard has surprising power and really snappy binds (on both the thin-ish OD string and the Diamond Blend I have on it now).
Gnarwhal 1 - 52x41 66g 4.1mm gap from 2010. This is enough to get me through any Zach/Takeshi/Kohei combo I want to do without any additional difficulty (it has been sili recessed though).
It’s funny how almost every yoyo release from the past several years feels so aggressively good it doesn’t matter what you play (outside of intentionally niche designs). But with older yoyos it feels like there’s a very large gap between yoyos that are every bit as good (or better) than modern releases, and others that feel like you need to heavily compensate for while playing them. Sure the Gnarwhal might feel overly heavy to modern preferences, but in terms of actually doing tricks it can still punch with the best of them.
I found my old oracle I thought I lost in NY. Nope it was hiding in my toiletries bag in a pouch I usually toss some deodorant in. Found it while packing for my long trip coming up. Most of my work travel this last few years has been a day trip or a few short days so I just tossed everything in the roller bag but 3 weeks is enough to actually pack proper and I found this old friend.
The string in this thing is funky. Gonna swap it and toss it around for memory sake. It’s the first yoyo I got that really looped well before that I either had butterfly shaped or a Raider which was way too unresponsive.
Heat!!!
Beautiful day to throw a SPYY. Ive been realizing lately that I know maybe 3-4 binds lol, so I’ve just been looking up all sorts of different ones and working on stuff I think is cool.
