There are only two forces at work on a yoyo as it pertains to the force you feel pulling against your throw hand (what you perceive as “weight”). That’s gravity (a constant) and centripetal force which is a function of string length and yoyo mass. Two yoyos with the same mass will exert the same force if they have the same string length. If you want a yoyo to “feel” lighter, i.e., have less force pulling away from your hand, then the only way to do get that short of heavily modifying the yoyo itself is to shorten your string.
Its definitely a word that people put a lot of different meanings to. For me, its generally how light/easy it feels to move / during movement.
I have an addition to this, part of my theory on yoyo feel.
The theory that I have is that your brain can interpret a yoyo as feeling lighter/heavier based on the diameter and shape, as well. Large, broad-rimmed yoyos feel like they have less inertia than they really do, because your brain estimates that they’ll have more inertia in the first place, due to the size/shape.
Clearly that’s not really a property of the yoyo itself, and more of a manifestation of imagined/illusory forces based on one’s own peculiar set of expectations. Yet another reason I don’t find reviews helpful in the least. Pretty much anything meaningful I’m going to learn about a yoyo, prior to trying it myself, comes from photos and specs.
I’ve mostly stopped using the term float because it’s a debate that goes back literally over a decade.
Now I use terms like hollowness or hollow feeling to describe what I used to use the term float for.
The shape and diameter are, though, and they are inputs to that system. Luckily they are visible in the specs/photos.
Oh, definitely. But any additional (or reduced) weight you think you feel because of some vague expectation you have based on what you see (rather than what a scale tells you) is entirely in one’s imagination.
I like this idea. The yoyo above has a bit of a hollow feel, but is pretty fast and has a sort of “hidden power” as mark put it while some yoyos are fast, this one is more of a distance runner, being able to go thru multiple tricks as fast as you’d want while also having spin leftover.
YoYos only “float” if they have flat bearings!!!
So I have been a little absent from YYE (well all social media in general) for a few weeks.
Where do I start… I thought I would start by sharing mail days
Weird flex I know (since most of these are budget yoyos) but I did just have a mother of all mail days.
(Sorry brace yourselves, many photos incoming)

It was a good day
this all arrived on the same day? My friend that’s a big day. Much new. Many fun.
also My new fave. Pricey though!!
Kind of, they all arrived like 2 weeks ago actually.
But I only just got around to opening them on Friday.
I’ve been lucky enough to have a lot of mail days recently but today may have been one of the most exciting:
Oh yeah totally. I bought a bunch to last me awhile since it costs a bit to ship it over to the UK
How do you like the Boost Afterburner? Haven’t heard anything about it yet on the forum.
That silver/gold Grasshopper GTX is my favorite colorway of that! And on that Zeppelin!
I must admit I have like only 5 min on each yet some more than others. Some maybe a bit less even.
Boost afterburner is great though by the way.
Um I’ll have to give it some more play though to be able to share any meaningful feedback though.
Oh the grasshopper GTX. Why did I not buy it sooner. It’s fab! Really is
