What did you get in the mail for 2020/2021?

For tha real OG’s

With the new addition of a WC WA edition, I now have a Shutter “collection”. Im not entirely sure how I feel about the WC edition yet, since I feel like the extra weight takes away from the extra light and nimble feel of the regular WAngle, but on the other hand I do think it performs a tad better. The champion is still the Butter though.

What’s that? Did you say something?

Sorry…my bad…I wasn’t listening.

It plays great for a plastic. Better than some metal yo-yos.

Can anyone compare Antidote and Dove?

Same. That said, YYF does b-grade/dead stock/blow out sales often enough that unless you’re going for something like the Ti-WA there isn’t much reason to pay them full price. And with those quality issues (and with other companies like Duncan blowing them out of the water QC-wise) I just buy all of my YYF stuff on sale/clearance.

I own a ton of YYF stuff (has to be north of 20, possibly over 30 jos) and I think the Butter, the Meerkat, WA Champion Ed, and the 2013-spec OG Shutter are the only YYFs I paid full price for. Meerkat b/c I wanted to show some love for Betty, WA and 2013 OG because I wasn’t sure how stock was gonna be, and Butter b/c hype train and I felt a little more confident with them partnering with a Japanese company (was hoping that would translate into better QC). I’m still butthurt that the WA and Meerkat had such tight bearing seats though I think I finally got the Meerkat smooth again.

What kills me is that YYF does a lot in terms of sponsorship so I wanna support them, and their jo designs are fun and well-performing, but omg they need to up their QC/A-grade standards.

I think yyf has great quality throws. I havent been upset with any of my yyfs ever except for a couple, and they have such great customer service. I stripped my boss (augie fash one) trying to take the bearing out way back in the day, and they tried to fix it and eventually replaced it no questions asked. I always tend to look past yyfs for boutique brands, but the more I get them the more blown away I am by just how good they are, and the more I want to support them. Sure some of them arent glass smooth, but i guess that doesnt bother me since I started throwing back when finding something glass smooth was ridiculously rare, and would generally cost triple the price of what most throws cost now.

Edit: cant speak for any of their TIs

I think I’m gonna email Gentry and ask what’s up with this. I saw him eating a stick of butter around the time this was dropping, maybe so just assumed to much but I thought it was some sort of marketing to imply that the new releases were smooth as butter.?

The YYF instagram said they were all “glass smooth” or very close to it.

Well mine sure ain’t. I have a K’edge that is smooth as glass. My GenXs is also smoother than the TiWangle. My reply Pro was smooth and I unscrewed it once and it’s never been the same since. I emailed via the contact form, we’ll see what he says.

Let me know because I typed a complaint up before and never sent it

I hope it gets sorted out. I would be pissed if I paid 350 bucks for a monometal ti, and it had vibe…

I submitted a complaint too. I didn’t want to but I know I’ll end up regretting it if I don’t

After more thorough testing mine actually does have a strong fingernail vibe on anything but light throws.

Of course this is even after damping it with my finger.

I’ve heard Ti is tougher to get smooth than Aluminum. It’s not an excuse for vibe on a high end throw, as perhaps their B grade rate should be higher.

I enjoy many YYF throws, but I do see where their quality standards are lagging behind much of the industry (strange to use that word for yoyos). I like to support YYF and I appreciate their position in the market. But, I think they might reevaluate their manufacturing source. There are so many brands turning out high quality yoyos for amazing prices (e.g. Duncan, as Nonja said).

Not just Duncan. Even small boutique brands seem to have super high quality standards for their throws these days.

I definitely appreciate that YYF may be pushing for more aggressive margins than small boutique companies to support their sponsorship goals (seriously, their stable overall is extremely competitive and they seem to be able to fly them everywhere to compete, not to mention Gentry’s travels, which is awesome) but if it’s affecting the product, then maybe a machine shop or anodizer needs to be swapped.

Edit: sorry to hijack the thread; happy to take this convo elsewhere if needed

Not just mail, but this is almost everything I’ve purchased (and a couple presents) since starting back up again in August. Between 2001 and 2019 I bought two throws, so I was making up for lost time, at least that’s what I’m telling myself. Thanks to all of you forum folks for the advice, my purchases got much more informed once I found this place. Y’all are awesome, and thanks for all the help!
