MRL-04 and Glacier Express. I always do a thing where if I put a yoyo up on the BST that I’m unsure of selling, I start feeling the urge to regularly throw it. I still don’t know how to feel about the MRL though, maybe I’ll pick up another set of shells for it. The Mod44 didn’t grow on me until I picked up a set of hatchback rims for it, so maybe a different shell is all I need for the MRL to really click with me.

Man…this yoyo is really good, I think I might have to pickup the production version to compare.

Which one of you G2 guys has both and wants to tell me the diff?

love this photo. how have you found the MRL, playwise? it looks incredibly intruiging!

I feel like I need to play another shell to really grasp what’s going on with it, because honestly I have no idea how much of the feeling is contributed by the core of the yoyo and how much is this specific shell for it.

With the 04 (Cliff inspired) shell the specs are 58.5 x 41.5 at 67g. Despite the weight it plays incredibly light and fast, there’s almost no stability or power to it and it just flies in any direction you want to push it in with zero effort. If you just handed it to me without knowing the specs, I would be adamant that this was <60g. The walls on the inner profile are also deceiving, it’s not like a real cliff that has the walls around the response at a sharp enough angle to minimize string contact. The walls around the response are just high enough that this has more in common with the play feel of a mid-walled organic yoyo.

I’m not a yoyo designer, so hearing the specs combined with the play feel might give you a better idea of the weight distribution than I have. But my layman’s interpretation of it is that the metal core of the yoyo is actually where the vast majority of the weight is on this yoyo. And that adding a big diameter shell with very little outer rim weight just further emphasizes an extremely center weighted bias.

I wanted this yoyo because I love the Cliff and Glacier Express, but it just plays nothing like either of those yoyos. I really can’t tell how much I like it, but I can absolutely say I’ve never played anything else remotely similar. The Mod44 and Core Co Standard both feel incredibly normal compared to how weird the MRL is.

I’m tempted to pick up either the 05 shell based on the SF Statement that has metal weight rings added, or the 03 shell which has even weirder specs. The 03 is 52 x 41 at 59g with a profile that’s trying to be a mini Surveillance. The rims on the 03 shell also look super beefy, so I’m curious if at 8 grams lighter than the 04, the 03 will play with more power and stability than the 04.

Sorry for the wall of text. Modular yoyos in general are super cool to me and I had more to say than I expected haha.

the wall of text is incredibly appreciated  i love hearing others delve into their thoughts on design and how they play, so this was a treat. thank you!

I have both the 03 and 05 shells and I can say I like them a little bit more than the 04. The 03 is my favorite because the center weight doesn’t seem as crazy since the yoyo is small. It does have better stability but still not amazing. Honestly they all have a similar feeling when playing them. All of them have a light feeling to them.

Hmm, so I guess that does kind of confirm my suspicion that most of the weight is in the hub instead of the shell. It could also be the shape of the hub since it’s more of a flat face/cap instead of being a normal concave cup like the Standard/Mod44.

I do think it’s interesting enough to keep around though. I’ll pick up an 03 shell tonight if you say that’s the one you like the most. Thanks.

what were the weight distribution changes compared to the proto? I watched through the video but didn’t seem to catch if you went over it.
