from watching a bunch of G2 videos it sounds as though the risk is crazy high, way higher b-grade and trash grade rates on swirls from what i’ve seen/heard. he recently went through a box of trash grade parts for a table that someone is making for him and there was an entire run of swirl parts in the trash because something went wrong.
Yeah, I could see there being a lot more risk involved from a more complex process, but at the same time isn’t Jake’s QC crazy high? Like what would still be an A grade to pretty much every other company would be B/trash grade for him?
I’d still happily pay full price for a swirl with some ano flaws. I feel like all of the splash anodized yoyos I’ve got have a few ano flaws on them (even some of the solids.) Yoyoball had their swirls sold for like 80 bucks on a monometal that wasn’t produced in a huge capacity, so I’m convinced it’s doable if another company really wanted to.
I think the main issue is no anodizer knows how to do it. The yoyoball guys used the same shop that g2 uses and that shop doesnt like doing yoyos anymore since its not very profitable for them.
Gruntbull has tried but it never looks as good.
Even g2 kept trying to find another shop that would get close to a similar quality and I dont think that went very well.
One of my regular shops (that used to do a version of a swirl) said they stopped because it was too time consuming. So they don’t even offer it.
It’s always possible to hunt around, but that’s a lot of extra work and handling for something with unknown results.
Here what you didn’t see in the release went trash grade
This is however not the primary reason I’m essentially decided on stopping making swirls (the qc i consider acceptable on monometals) Rather its more about the time it takes which i only learned about not too long ago. Id choose to believe its of better sustainability not only for me but also the manufacturer to focus on something less time consuming. We have only 3-4 manufacturers left in the entire world experienced on making yoyo anodizings of comparable quality, and then they are the only 1 relatively accessible for small brands like us.
Damn it … there’s apparently no way to thumbs up your post more than once.
Finally started exploring bearings… YYR DS bearings and NSK where my first, i have to say the YYR DS are fantastic… NSK a well but not sure it’s worth the price difference for me…
Recently @JesterDClown (one of the best to do Trades with! Don’t hesitate! ) gifted me a Mazel top ceramic hybrid braring. So i decided to compare the Mazel top, YYR DS and the @MonkeyFingerYOYO Tasmanian Tornado on a trio of Aoti … (i figured same yoyo will be a fair comparison)
Any preliminary thoughts? I love the mazal full ceramic. But expensive
So… the mazal ceramic hybrid is very good… i bought 4 from them soon as i got out of the train. I have no doubt they are worth it…4 bearings for $24. Good deal.
Edit …I have to agree with @NitroBobby916 the Tasmanian tornados by MFD are also great and holds there own against the other 2… but the Mazal bearings at easier to clean (no lube cause they are supposed to run dry) so that and the price are very attractive.
AND?!?!?!?
no, seriously…what are your thoughts. i’ve used all 3. i just put the MFD tasmanian in the Unknown Inception because the bearing it had was a bit gritty. it’s right there with the YYR DS in my opinion which i like only slightly more than the NSK. i would take any of the 3 to be honest. all are pretty excellent bearings. (YYR Platinum being my favorite).
edit: i just ordered some Mazal Top Hybrids to try out…
enjoy the throw my friends.

That’s the Early Autumn colorway! It’s beautiful!
(Just kidding)
@RC_yo-yo Bitterfly. Truth be told I started the session on my Butterfly, but it sounded pretty weird. Turns out I cracked it from rim to starburst but the thing still plays. I got out the school glue and did a field repair, but it’s drying now. I should pick up some gold school glue and lean into the whole wabi sabi aesthetic.
This a fruit roll up?
Is that from the first run? The color is awesome!
Edit: on second thought, is it modded?
