It really does come down to time and practice.
I’ve been trying to learn 1 new trick each week and at the start of each week it feels like I just can’t do the trick. But I keep at it day after day and usually towards the end of the week I finally start understanding the trick. Not all of the tricks I’m able to do within that week…but I continue to work on them and over time I’ve started to get them down.

Another thing to consider…is what yo-yo you’re using. Using a nice unresponsive yoyo can help a TON when learning string tricks. You can get a magicyoyo N12 Shark Honor or Y01 Node for $15 or less if you look around online. They’re both fantastic metal yo-yos for the price!
There’s also lots of really nice yo-yos right here on yoyoexpert for under $20.

But honestly…it comes down to practicing and putting effort into it.
I absolutely think you can get there, it just takes a bit of time

I’d love to hear updates from you as you improve! It can be a real self-esteem booster as you start getting tricks down that you once weren’t able to!

Here’s some nice $20 or less yo-yos YoYoExpert sells that might make things easier (depending on what yoyo(s) you already own and use):

And here’s one of my favorite tricks…it’s pretty tough to get down and get consistant, but it’s very rewarding, looks super cool and helps you get good at landing the trapeze, trapeze + bro, double or nothing and triple or nothing.

It’s called Rewind:

That sucks :frowning:
Any chance you could convince your parents or another older family member to order one for you?

What yo-yo are you currently using?

Having a decent yo-yo can make such a HUGE difference!

Such a cool looking yo-yo!

I don’t know anything about this yoyo so I’m not sure how well it plays. It looks like it should be more than enough to learn with though :D. It sure looks great!!

It can be frustrating when you first start learning to yoyo…getting the basics down can be tough.
But keep at it and you’ll so get there!
I hope to hear more from you as you progress!!

One thing that helps a lot is spending 5 minutes or so learning how to fix the tilt of a yo-yo on a Trapeze with your yo-yo strings.

People that do long combos are usually correcting tilt the entire time, and after a while it becomes subconcious.

This is particularly useful for side style as it can be a bit tricky at first to know how the yo-yo is going to respond. I suggest trying it out!

Thx for the tip but kinda knew that already but still thx I appreciate every help I can get

The trick is just to practice. When I first started throwing to the side, it felt awkward and I couldn’t get the yoyo to come out straight and smooth. Now it’s just muscle memory that I have to try to mess up. So just keep at it and it will eventually come to you.

Nice, thanks for the info, that is useful to identify where you’re at

Since you found this forum, I bet you saw the YoYoExpert tutorials (vids) that are really helpful and explain how to do many side style tricks: YoYoExpert.com - Yo-Yo Tricks, Videos, and More - Make the Simple Amazing!

There’s also other great tutorials on Youtube that break down side style tricks.

Here’s a cool one to try:

It took me a while to properly throw a breakaway - the foundation of most yoyo tricks today… I just couldn’t grasp how to comfortably throw the yoyo sideways as I felt like I was twisting my arm in unnatural ways. I used to cheat and throw normal and step around to the side of the yoyo so I could see what a Trapeze felt like way back in the day.

For a while I held the yoyo sideways like I was twisting a doorknob,it worked until I went to throw again and had to reposition the yoyo… One day, it clicked and threw it properly.

The trick that got me really comfortable with the side throws is Matrix, which is a trick you can repeat as much as you want. It was one of the first tricks that taught me about flow. Here’s the trick:

I also second the “Rewind” trick as it helps with consistency, speed, and flow. “Skin the Gerbil” is another fun one to pick up once you got Matrix abs Rewind down.
Best of luck!
