Trick-a-Week 2026 - # 16: Tate Repeater

April fools  this trick is awesome though

For real, this month let’s do chopsticks since that was the runner up in the poll. Starting with the original:

A more in-depth tutorial:

Hopefully we can build into some cool chopsticks combos over the next few weeks!

Week 11 rejection whip catch up:

Still working on protrusions… so difficult.

Hard to get consistent with these rejections, I have a couple tips.

  1. Using your thumb on both rejections to initiate the rejection really helps with the pop that gets it to revolve around your hand.

  2. stronger throw to catch and pop the string.

  3. highwall organics (I’m using a diorama)

  4. jade whip/ iron whip is a good practice for landing the string. Similar techniques for both, but different hand positions.

If I’m not mistaken, the first video shows the pop up landing on the brother mount, while Kowalksi’s has it landing on a trapeze. Is one or the other considered more correct? IME so far it’s a bit easier to get the pop up closer to looking correct while aiming for the brother mount, but that’s the part that’s still roughest for me so I’m not sure.

the original way the trick was done is the way dylan did it

trick is at 0:45

it’s still jason lee in the incorrect tutorial though so it doesn’t really matter either way lol

oh nice, thanks! Yeah, I was guessing it wouldn’t matter much, but I was curious. I love stuff like Doc Pop’s history vids, so I’m always wondering how tricks got started and evolved over time.

And Dylan’s way does make the repeater nicer, too.

Week 14: Back and Forth Chopsticks Combo

Building off of last week’s trick. Could be done as a repeater. Have fun and please let me know if you have questions/comments!

Week 13

It was approximately 1 million percent humidity at the dock so that slide to the chopsticks-out kept snagging

Can’t quite figure out how to repeat it, the string keeps sliding down my fingers.

Shout-out to @ben_jammin for the leaf and throwing with me

Anyone have any sweet tips for landing the second hop in the Chop-Hops?

Yeah the TH → NTH hop is tough! I’m doing a bit better with a shorter string and trying to keep the string taught during that hop. Not sure if there’s any trick to it other than practicing how hard to toss it

i’ve found that with chopsticks hops and other hops that are pretty precise you have to carefully manage how taught the string is to ‘pull’ the yoyo into the “target” almost (think of an eli hop where you pull the yoyo back down by bringing your hands apart again vs trying to let it fall back between your hands, one is a lot easier than the other)

basically slack is your enemy and play around with your hand spacing/angles

You don’t really need tension the whole th to nth hop. It is helpful to have it at the end to pull the yoyo onto the string. I kinda keep nth closed and then open up the chopsticks C shape and push into the string with nth thumb to establish that tension and pull the yoyo onto the string. I 200% agree that it should feel kind of like an eli hop like how you want to pull the yoyo onto the string vs just trying to catch it loose.

My advice is focus mostly on the end of it right before landing it
