Trick-a-Week 2024—#51 Circus Ring

I feel your pain brother, I’ve been yoyoing for 4 years and I’m just now starting to feel “competent” at it… I’m still working on TaW tricks from 2023! Hang in there and most importantly, have fun!

Chopsticks are tough to get a handle on - it’s kind of something that just takes time to get comfortable with.

For this one, is the trouble you’re having landing in the chopsticks (it hitting your thumb for instance) or it binding up on you?

definitely. no way I’ll burn out. i joke but i have fun grinding. plus I’m not afraid to say eff this trick

hits my hand a lot. im working on my “c” formation. middle finger feels way better. i also feel like theres not enough string in that it bounces off the double strings a bunch. i can record an attempt but I’ve been thinking maybe i need to close my fingers a bit to give the mount a little slack as if im actually closing chopsticks, but so far i haven’t been able to put that thought into practice successfully

Tell you what, if you record a couple attempts then I’ll record a few with modifications so we can diagnose what all is happening

Here’s a few tricks for y’all:
Week 48 - A couple of houdini mount tricks

And here is a flashback to week 42 - Beef Bowler 26 #47

I’m still struggling with that weird part at 22 seconds of week 47 - Hajime Miura Triangle, any one have any more tips? I can land it correctly about 20-30% of the time, but it’s usually more of a happy accident…

Yeah so it really helps to know exactly what you’re aiming to do. It is hard to see and feels confusing but it is actually a pretty simple idea. You’re just trying to move the segments of string on your index around from the side facing your throwhand under and around to the other side of the bearing, bc of the formation going on, they will get stuck kinda and the mount changes. I see this alot in 3a but not so much in 1a bc often if you just rotate a string around the bearing, you end up exactly where you started. Maybe that conceptual breakdown might help? I think that’s the best I can do rn and I’ll see if I can make a vid later that helps show that better.

i can say fwiw i was only able to start landing that part when i brought my hands closer together to get a little slack in the mount before swinging it around to land on that back string. i hope I’m explaining that well and that we’re talking about the same part

okay so it looks to me like you’re not too far off tbh the main problem going on I think is that you’re not hitting all the strings like accuracy. I think try to just slow down and be very deliberate. line everything up and go through the thumb strings onto the chopsticks. One of those attempts you did do that correctly, but then the yoyo spun out. make sure to keep everything lined up once you land and also you can pinch the string and let the other strings drop the moment you land it. Charlie might have some more tips but that’s what I can think of right now.

tks! I’m also starting to notice it also looks almost like yall are dropping more vertically into the chopstick than a normal chopstick mount would be

Okay had to try something out and yes it is like that for sure! That’s a good observation. With a normal chopsticks on NTH, you barely move NTH and it’s really controlled by the movement of TH. This one is definitely more like a scoop almost bc of the set up with houdini. I still think it’s good to be comfortable with normal chopsticks bc it will help teach you how to hold your hand but yeah this is also different.

Week 49–BIND WEEK
This week we are going to be doing something different and taking a moment to focus on binds. Just try to learn some new binds. Binds are cool and really help tie tricks together so it’s worth taking a moment to think about them and see what all is out there. I’m going to like some videos of some binds but please don’t limit yourself to only these, learn that one cool bind you bookmarked ages ago but never got around to or just any binds. Also please feel free to ask about anything that you get stuck on and I’ll be happy to try to see what I can help with or other ppl will also. Have fun a good luck!

Here’s a random assortment of binds. I very rarely do grinds outside of binds, but grind binds always rule.
