The Weather

Is the weather getting less predictable? I think that we are much better at this than we were even ten years ago. Is weather getting more severe? I don’t know. But I do see weather ‘records’ falling from the early 1900’s, so it must have been severe then too.

Humans have a great tendency to see their current events as somehow ‘special’. Severe, unpredictable weather is nothing new. I think larger population, living in a larger planet-wide footprint makes us much more aware of extreme weather when it happens in many more places. There is no such thing as ‘normal’ weather.

That said; it is raining like a monsoon here in the Pacific Northwest today.

-1 F here when I got up this morning.

This winter and last have been pretty good and cold, but the 10 or so winters before them were way above average. A lot of the work I do relies on the ground freezing, so I pay attention to the cold temps!

I grew up in Siberia, Altai Krai. By this time of year I’d normally be fully dressed for -20° to -30° C (-4° to -22° F) weather and observe the snow layer growing taller than my knees.

I haven’t lived in russia for a few years now, but I have been told the winters are getting so mild there, that it barely snows enough for thick layers to pile up and the temperature ranges from 0° to -15°C (32° to 5° F).

There have been a litany of storms here just recently as mentioned in OP. I thought it was over but there was another again the other day. There has often been less than an hour of warning before a storm has hit us because the warnings were only issued once the storm showed up on weather radars. It was known that there would be a lot of thunderstorms, but even so we failed to predict when they’d happen and what their path would be.

Yet we had no hurricanes this season. Hmmm.

Weather’s definitely decided which yoyos to throw…basically anything organic/round, no sharp edges…nothing worse than a sharp edge coming up to a cold hand. I’m a wimp, it’s been in the low 40s in CA/bay area.

Haha I feel that. Also when it’s so wet out I feel bad using anything without a sealed bearing

Ive noticed the news likes to over hype the weather. Not sure if it’s to get views or something deeper than that. Ironic this is a topic because I been talking about it with my friend lately how it seems like every few days the news is calling for “IMPACT DAY” and it’s just normal rain or snow. This is front and center on a Pittsburgh news channel for a few snow flakes coming today..

Snow and ice are completely foreign here, so I’d never expect that to make the road slippery and would appreciate the warning if I had just settled in an area with weather like that. We get warnings about high UV every year, but skin cancer is a big problem here and there are always going to be people who are ignorant about appropriate sun protection.

I use 4 different weather apps to keep up with the weather for my job, each one is completely different from the other. Even the radars will be different. I don’t know what they are going off of these days.

The “if it bleeds it leads” of weather lol

FLAKES EXPECTED TO FALL. Better get to the store and clear out all the eggs, bread, and milk. It’s pretty pathetic to try to warn people of something we expect in winter.

I feel this. Basically my whole professional career was spent working outdoors. It is absolutely insane how the smallest little brush into something or just the slightest scrape can be so brutally painful.

At 37 F or lower I’m sticking to plastic. The feel of cold metal is :skull:

There is no escape haha.

I brought my Yeti when I took my son to the playground the other day. After the heat from riding in my pocket wore off that sucker was vicious haha

Yup that was me the other night…44 out with probably with a wind chill and some incoming fog…up in a boom lift and trying to fix some xmas lights on a building that weren’t wired right. Fingers got stiff, body was tensing up and any slight smack resulted in a significant amount of discomfort…that was a sign to land the basket and call it.

My heated seats and steering wheel came to my rescue as my hands became stiff.

My sister gifted me a pair of electronic hand warmers last Christmas, they are incredible for my stiff hands in days like today when the shop is just too cold. The pair I have are a little too sensitive with their power button so I get accidental power-ons and offs or temp changes, but overall they are fantastic
