The Honeymoon phase

A lot of people talk about this, and it happens to me also. If you don’t know what the honeymoon phase is it basically means that when you get a new yo-yo you love it just because it is new. Do you find this to be true with your new yo-yos?

Most definetly. But sometimes you come across one and the honeymoon never ends.

I think we all have different types too. One yoyo that isn’t my forever might be someone else’s forever.

Then their are some yoyos that we as a collective come to a consensus that the honeymoon will never end. Then we all fight for her sisters because the stupid manufacture only made 50, lol.

I’m so guilty of constantly letting myself be a victim of the honeymoon phase lol… I’ve tried more recently to be aware of it but sometimes I can’t help myself from rushing to the forums after getting a new throw and spouting off some stuff like, “This is definitely already in my top 10 for sure” :joy::joy::joy:

Still trying to figure out I’m still in the honeymoon phase with my WISH, or if it really is that crazy good (I think it is!)

BUT to flip the question around, has anyone experienced the OPPOSITE of the honeymoon phase? I don’t know if there’s a word or phrase for it, but basically you’ll get a yoyo, not like it, or think it’s just whatever, but don’t sell it. Some time passes, and you pick it up again, and then you’re weirdly blown away at how great it is, and it’s weird because you don’t remember thinking it was this good when you got it, but now you realize how awesome it is. This happened to me most recently with the Burnside 20/20. SUPER underrated yoyo. When I got it, I was like “Yeah this is good, but Imma throw my Free Solo instead” but dude, the Burnside is awesome. Anyone have that happen?

Yeah that happens to me sometimes! Actually kinda happened with my Silenus, I think it’s because a put a new string on it though lol

Absolutely, the biggest instance of what you’re describing happened to me with the Akita. I got one and wasn’t impressed mostly because of not being used to the smaller than typical gap size paired with super grippy pads. Although once I got better at throwing in general the gap size started bothering me less and less. And now with summer tires it’s actually become one of my favorite yoyos to the point where I got a third and then immediately had to wonder why I just got a third.

I’ve definitely experienced both the honeymoon and the anti-honeymoon phase. Also, the super-honeymoon where you really like it during the honeymoon phase and then find yourself liking it even more, the more you play with it.

Still haven’t got out of the honeymoon phase for a couple of yo-yos and I guess that would be what some have coined the super honeymoon phase. I just call them my favorites lol

I did not like my Top Deck for 7-9 months or more. The Pyramatte finish felt weird and unlike my other yoyos and I became indifferent to it. As I gained experience I liked it. Then I liked it alot and for the last two years it’s been my favorite yoyo. Some yoyos I instantly love and know are keepers, others I am sure will remain middle tier but who knows? They may become loved one day as my throwing evolves. Some yoyos I loved a year ago I had no qualms about unloading cheap on BST because I wanted someone else to have them and love or flip them as they held little interest for me.

Maybe it’s the ROMCOM experience? Like you meet this yoyo who’s so obvs not your type, but then there’s a musical montage where you spend time together and maybe you start having some feelings for each other. Then a serious conflict happens, prompting soul searching and then finally true love in the 3rd act

I personally have never experienced the honeymoon phase and I’m not too sure why. Maybe I just lack the excitement of getting a new yoyo in the mail. Anyway, I can usually decide whether or not a throw is going to live on my desk or go into storage within the first 10-30mins of playing with it. My favourite yoyos are the yoyos that I fell in love with on the first few throws, never something that I took out from storage to play with after a while of collecting dust.

The Iceberg was like that for me. It was my most expensive throw at the time, and I thought it was horrible. Now, with the exception of the noise, it’s my absolute favorite. If I’m outside, it’s the one I take.
