Are scalpers really an issue in our hobby? I only ask as an honest curiosity… I feel like I don’t see new releases on immediate resale/markup ever, if at all.
In Pokemon? Obvious, I can barely buy the minimum 2 packs per person once every few years that I’m lucky enough to find them at Target… while the local video game shops are selling booster packs for 300% markup and ebay is beyond a joke at this point.
Or even Transformers! Target, again, with the exclusive Starscream releases that employee have been caught hiding, selling and are easily found in droves in ebay for 300-400% resale mark up.
I think the reality is this: we are still in a boom. We may be at the tail end, or a lull at the very least, but we’re in a boom. Lots of new and returning players are posting (and buying) regularly.
The part we are seeing now is the fact that sales have slowed for MOST releases and so, a lot of us are dialing back production numbers. Boutique runs on slim margins and, I know I mentioned this recently in another thread, most are 1 failed release away from going defunct.
I just am not seeing $1000 Peak Legacies up on the BSTs, or $150 Summit2s for that matter.
No worries mate they will definitely return and prolly with better colorways. Its gone out to YYE and other retailers. These went by way too quickly, clears were gone in seconds. The only chance was with blues and greys tbh.
Right, I think “scalpers” is probably too strong of a word.
I don’t think many people, if any, are intentionally buying these just to resell them at insane prices. But the scarcity and demand have definitely caused them to show up in BST for way above retail. And I think that’s also motivating people who aren’t really into the yoyos to buy them as investments. After all, if they don’t end up enjoying it, they can just sell it for a profit, which then further contributes to the scarcity.
There there little buddy. It seems as if there will be more to come with the statement that each person involved in the process will end up with their own signature colorway.
That might be a difficult transaction to acquire. I actually thought about seeing if someone who had an extra might not consider a temporary trade with me so they could try something I have that they might like, and I get to try the Summit 2 and see if I even like it. Surely someone out there wants to PROVE to me that I NEED one. but seriously…
