Splash all the way! Every single one is unique and I can get lost looking at it for hours. ![]()
splashes have more variance than solids
a bad splash is infinitely worse than a solid, but a well done splash is chef’s kiss
i’m way more picky about surface finish (pyramatte
)
I said splash, but like, old school splash, like wooly marmot splashes/drips
depends on the solid and splash. the shine from a nice metallic solid is hard to beat.
Washes > splashes
Is it too much to ask for both???
I meant wash + splash, but that’s still pretty cool. Hey, didn’t YYE stick a solid purple bRainier? That would be an interesting half swap with a purple splash one
I like some very specific splashes, but nice semi-dark, saturated, vibrant solids really just hit a mark for me
When done right I love a good solid like Offset or Atmos. Although shout out to Atmos and Monkeyfinger for splashes done with style.
i selected splashes, but i really like splatter swirls, ghosting and tattoos. i will pick a solid though - generally clear. i’m not a big fan of half-swaps, unless they were from the factory as such.
I usually don’t like very busy splashes. One Drop’s are tasteful, Magicyoyo’s is about as far as I can tolerate. Lately I’ve been opting for acid washes that blur busyness away (Dressel Monsoon, YYFr Stingray, Sengoki Raijin). Fades always welcome. Featherspin’s bird-themed annos are great, mixing streaks and dots. Recess’ Confetti is a great use of many colors. Caribou Lodge’s named color combos are great branding. Good engraved designs can outweigh aesthetic color preferences for me (e.g, KnotCreators Zaphkiel in Nightmare, C3yoyodesign’s lineage engravings, Recess’ artworks).
Solid if they’re in unique shades (e.g., Atmos, Luftverk, Edition), homage colors (At Design Lab referencing Bape, Eetsit, etc.), can be half-swapped (again, One Drop, and Duncan Freehand Ones), or just look good. Surface finish can impact that greatly. Color range helps; I generally like the range Wild and YYFr offer.
Ultimately it’s industrial design and visual arts, so if it comes from that viewpoint it’ll work out. If it’s splashes for their own sake then it’s boring.
