Naw I haven’t..looks cool tho!
Quite frankly, the legacy polycarb yoyos from Yoyojam, Duncan and Spintastics were and still are good performing yoyos.
Are you talking about the new Northstar? I got a fingerspin Northstar from the may sale one year and it was complete trash, but older Protostar I have is actually really good, just a small gap and really annoying spacers of course.
Luftverk’s plastics have been my favorite to throw. While iYoyo’s Shooting Star is great, it just doesn’t hit like my pFulvia did. The Pleak I had certainly played well, but it just wasn’t to my taste. I know that there are a few people on here that have nothing bad to say about it. I still miss my pFulvia and really hope to add a hybrid one and maybe even a Stelvia XSP to it
I was talking about the new Northstar.
i think it was PLSTC and antidote that started that transparent machined PC look before shooting star and speedaholic XX ? both were above all other plastics iirc
I believe antidote and plstc were both injection molded, but both were such great plastics for their release in 2019!
just shows my memory getting things wrong, they were known for the smooth blast finish.
the great machined yoyo at the time was dove from yoyofriends. it was POM plastic, which requires it to be machined … iirc ![]()
POM can be injection molded. Some of the old YYF plastics like Whip and Onestar are injection molded celcon.
Yes, plastic can be very good.
The Yoyorecreation Diffusion 2 was the plastic that changed the game. The Diffusion 2 threw away the idea of copying the design of an aluminum yo-yo but using plastic; and moved to a plastic-oriented design that used thicker centers and heavier rims. The result was a plastic yo-yo that was as good as any metal. Many manufacturers have copied this design philosophy with the addition of metal rims and use of machined PC.
Now, if they could only overcome the incessant hissing some plastic yo-yo’s have…
I actually forgot how great YYJ yoyos were. If my memory is correct, they were USA made as well. Seems like they came out with that new axle setup (to correct the cracking that they were prone to) and then went out of business. Would be great to see those designs again.
Yeah the YYJ Classic was amazing. Really cheap too and came in lots of cool colour combos.
It’s super subjective because everyone is from a different era of yoyoing. For folks that haven’t been yoyoing as long, they’d say 2024 - 2025, old hats would say early 2000s up to today. If we’re talking strictly plastics without any attached weight rings or metal rims that list is surprisingly pretty extensive.
With hybridized plastics that have metal rims and what not, that list is even longer and it would date back to the late 90s with YYJ.
I only want to mention strictly “mono” plastics below because I feel those are a good representation of what a good playable plastic is without the aid of extra weight from metal rims because that list would be exhaustively long. There are so many good plastics out there.
Here are some that I feel still hold up as being straight up timeless well performing plastics. The criteria for me is, long spin-time, exceptionally smooth spins, I don’t want to feel it vibrating or wobbling at the end of the string. If it can be easily tuned without extensive modifications, it also qualifies. The last thing is, it’s from personal experience. I have owned all of these at one point or another.

I like plastic yoyos alot too. Something about that relaxed/toylike feel. I have been curious about the SF PLSTC and UNRPLD/TopYo Antidote…How do they feel compared to the Speedaholic XX or Shooting Star? Anybody have any thoughts?
Yes! Earlier I threw my plastic Speedaholic XX and it felt so nice to throw and catch. Almost like I didn’t have to feel so serious about it. You nailed it: toylike. All yoyos are toys, but plastic is a nice change of pace! Enjoy the throw!
Chris
I must, respectfully, disagree on naming the Yoyorecreation original Diffusion as a ‘timeless well performing plastic”. There is one yo-yo that Yoyorecreation has made that just plain sucked. That was the original Diffusion. Really; just garbage.
The Diffusion 2, however, was; and is one of the best playing yo-yo’s out there. When it came out it was revolutionary performance for a plastic yo-yo.
Edit:
Actually, now that I think about it a little more.. Let’s nix the Diffusion 1 from the list hahaha! Diffusion 2 is definitely the one to seek out ![]()
Had to pull out more plastics tonight. I get the same out of metal but it’s soooo nice to experience…plastic!
How is the miracle polycarb?
