Hi. Welcome to the world of yoyo. First, you don’t have to learn any trick or style you don’t want, but, keep in mind that in 1A some tricks build off of each other (these are mentioned in the tutorials).
Looping has a steep learning curve, and, you need a responsive yoyo. If you don’t want to learn looping, you don’t have to.
The Shutter is anodized, not painted (paint is on the surface, anodization changes and I believe strengthens the surface - but, others who are know more than I can speak more to this). Hitting the Shutter on the floor or furniture can and likely will damage the surface of the Shutter. You can have small or large damage, depending on the surface your yoyo hits.
All of that said, yoyos are toys, they should be played and enjoyed. One member here has referred to damage as “battle scars” and “love marks”. Like people, yoyos pick up signs of use over time.
I also started recently, will do my best to help you
1- Around the world/looping is not really needed, although I would recommend learning looping just to be better with regens.
2- Unfortunately, you will hit the ground/tables/chairs… And even the ceiling! And yes, your yoyo will develop some battle scars, but don’t worry, it happens to everyone. People usually call them “dings”, but battle scars sound way cooler.
Tips: learn snap start and tricks to adjust your string tension quickly, it will save you a lot of time when learning new tricks. There’s a youtuber, Brandon Vu who has videos for both of these, check him out
The most important thing to remember about yoyoing is to never think of playing with your yoyo as practice or work. Always think of it as play, because once you lose the joy of yoyoing there’s really no point in doing it and it won’t be fun anymore.
All good advice here. By the way, welcome to yoyoing. It’s a really nice and supportive group here, you’ll enjoy it.
I’ve only been throwing a bit over a year and yeah, all the yoyos I purchase in the first 6 months or so have dings in them. As does a chair in my house, a door, the dog . . .
I dinged my new DV888 within 30 minutes of buying it. I really need to be more careful.
As far as “do I have to learn X” Nah, not at all. For example, I’m not a fan pf picture tricks so things like Jamacian Flag don’t appeal to me. That’s cool, it’s just what I like vs what other people like. It’s a good idea to learn the tricks in the learning section in order, but if you don’t like a particular trick then just skip it.
There are certain tricks however which are more “elements” than “tricks”. Things like the trapeze, 1 1/2 mount, double or nothing, trapeze and his brother and wrist mount are all examples of things which are used in later tricks. So those tricks are ones you won’t want to skip . Andre is pretty good in his videos about letting you know when a particular trick depends on learning a previous trick. So you’ll know pretty quickly if you skipped a trick you need.
the only two mandatory tricks that I am aware of are walk the dog and rock the baby. doesnt’ matter if you can do all the master level tricks. if you don’t do those, you are not a “real” yoyo’er. so, get rocking and walking.
