New to spin tops - questions about strings

I recently discovered spin tops through one of my algorithms on YouTube. I have been playing with a few Cometa Jumbo Cobras for a few days while waiting on my YYF Short Circuit, Elec-Trick & S8 Alice to arrive.

Questions about strings -

  1. how big is the “sweet spot” for string length? I have been using 4 different strings with 2 different tops and the results seem to be similar.

  2. is it possible to make a string with/without a starter ring based on an existing string that does not/does have one? How much length do you add/subtract? Or is it just trial & error?

  3. if string length is dependent only on the size/shape/weight of a top, shouldn’t it be possible to make a database of string size & length per top? Does such a thing exist somewhere I have not yet found?

  4. if you have a Jumbo Cobra, what length string are you using?

Thanks!

I use 47 inches with my jumbo cobra :snake:. However, I’m going to go a little thinner and at least 50 inches.

Mark Hayward and Dave Schulte have string length charts that are “correct” or work per size. But I’m going to add that string length and thickness are personal preference after you learn what does what. I would rather tilt the top back pretty aggressively during the throw just so I can have longer string.

Thanks for the info. I adjusted the stock string to about 47-48” and the ACE Hardware #24 cotton twine string that’s slightly thinner is around 50-51”. Glad to know I’m in the ballpark. Looking forward to trying out more tops/strings/options.
