I will share something with you guys.
I have about 1500 yo-yos now. Almost nothing compared to some folks I know.
All my yo-yos have 1 thing in common. None of them came with the ‘tricks included’.
I have stuff from Dollar tree yo-yos, up to several thousand dollars worth of titanium yo-yos.
I don’t have any sort of dedicated display in any one of my houses. And I have 3 houses🤓.
It is not uncommon for me to be looking through crates of yo-yos and find yo-yos I forgot I even had. And have sometimes looked for certain yo-yos and then realized I had: sold, traded or just given away the yoyo I was looking for, lol.
I have mentioned an edge I accidentally have, that allows me a pretty flexible budget.
I don’t: smoke, don’t drink, don’t do drugs, no medical marijuana. And I don’t gamble or travel much. What good is that?
Simple. I have what I call ‘discretionary funds’. You know the old saying, ‘saving money is a form of making money’.
I say this is accidental because not having any of the mentioned habits just allows me money to spend on other stuff.
I have several credit cards. They all have zero balances. Whatever I may charge, I pay off within the month.
That doesn’t make me ‘special’. I am no genius. I’m 70 and I’m still working so I can’t be too bright, lol.
I am in no special religion or any group that abstains from vices. I just decided my path decades ago. I am not a health nut. And I don’t try to brainwash people into giving up whatever costly habits they may have.
I NEVER EVER buy a yoyo thinking if it’s expensive, it should play like it. Some titanium yo-yos aren’t expensive because they ‘are supremely’ better. They are often more expensive simple because titanium is harder to machine, so the root costs are higher and the numbers in most Ti runs are smaller. And because of possible b grade failure rates, the makers adjust their prices to allow them to make a return on their investment. Anybody thinking that buying a $400+ yoyo is gonna get you waaay more performance than less expensive options, needs a brain colonoscopy.
I have a Shaqshine FG that plays as well or better for me than anything I have. The One Drop Free Solo is amazing. And the New very reasonably priced YYF Bettynova is Weapon Grade good.
Every yoyo I have has offered some sort of interesting adventure for me. I have very few regrets about most yo-yos I’ve bought. But I certainly don’t need 1500 hundred yo-yos, lol.
I will give you guys some good advice. Buy yo-yos, sell yo-yos, trade yo-yos, give yo-yos away, whatever. Have fun and learn some tricks and/or just have fun displaying them or whatever.
But never buy or feel compelled to spend $a short Ton of money on a single exotic yoyo dreaming it has some Magical effects built in to it. Never feel stressed because because you missed a drop and that signals the end of the World. It doesn’t.
Yo-yos are supposed to be fun. They are toys that you try to learn to control. Don’t fall in to the dilemma of allowing yo-yos to control you.
And if/when you get a new yoyo. Don’t be preoccupied about how much resale value it will lose if you ding it, etc. You can’t have fun if you live in fear. And if you fear losing your investment value, than you should have bought something less expensive.
I have mentioned this before> Less than 5 percent of yoyo players ever(Ever) enter any Contest at any level. So the perpetual ‘Is it a Competition level yoyo’ question hasn’t any real value to most of us.
PS… I ordered a Gravity yoyo. Did I need one? Do I have to have one? Is it going to smoke all my other yo-yos? 1. No. 2 No. 3 most likely not.
Why did I buy one? Simple, to try it and see if I like it.
Do I think it is worth $400? Dunno… but that is the buy in price to get one and throw it around.
Yo-yos are fun. If you have yo-yos and you are having fun, the. You are on the right path. If you let any aspect of yo-yos get you upset, you need to defragment and realign your mind.
I happen to like titanium yo-yos a lot. And if they were much less expensive, I am sure I would like them even more.
