I relatively new to the yoyo scene, i have been yoyoing for about two years and i love it. Since I’ve started i have watched videos from all major events and look forward to them. However, one thing that ive noticed is that there is no major coverage for these events. There are hardly ever interviews with the top pros that are competing. All you see online are the videos of their routines and thats about it. So my question is, why is there a lack of interviews and behind the scene coverage at major events?
the reason is partly because these events aren’t really that big and most of the “pros” you can easily talk to on facebook or the forums so people dont really care. This isn’t like the major gaming events that have huge setups huge budgets and hundreds of thousands of people watching.
However they are trying to change this and work on getting more and more special features for the contests. Worlds next year is going to set the stage for what can be done in a contest.
Also if you want to see behind the scenes there are some videos of yoyonews that people have taken showing what worlds is like other then the stage… If i weren’t so lazy i would post them…
It’s hard enough getting a group of yo-yo players on stage in a timely fashion, trying to interview all of them at a contest would be pretty time consuming.
They’ve done pretty well with it at the past two WYYC when they have a live stream and a larger staff, but for smaller contest it is unlikely to happen.
I agree with you, I think it could be cool for someone to interview some of the players while they’re standing around. There was a lot of waiting around at the contest I went to and if someone wanted to walk around and interview some of the players I would imagine it would be not too difficult.
I’m sure the players wouldn’t mind. This is a really good idea and could draw some more attention to yoyoing. It would also make viewers more invested in their favorite players by getting to know them a little better.
It would be cool but also pretty time consuming
Alecto’s answer couldn’t have painted the picture any clearer. If you really want to see this happen
feel free to take your camera and do some interviewing…I highly doubt anyone would try to stop you.
Yoyonews killed it with the interviews for EYYC 2014
Would love to see this kind of thing more often. No doubt Steve has some stuff up his sleeve for next year.
The problem is that people say they want this kind of stuff, but it’s crazy time consuming and look at the view count on those videos…two years later only Petr Kavka’s has more than 3,000 views. Many of them are under 1000, and in the short period of time they were online between me uploading them at 4 am the night after prelims and finals the next day, they all had less than 200 views when the players hit the stage for finals. So as far as a device for getting people at home excited to see these players on the live stream the next day, it doesn’t work. (Yet. The yoyo industry is still very, very small. Maybe this will change in years to come, but it’s not there yet.)
Right now it’s just more work than we can handle for most events. I love the format, I love the content, I just don’t know how to make it work for more contests without throwing money at it, and we don’t have money to throw.
