MoonageMin & Twitch's Trick-a-Week Challenge! (2020)

Thanks dude!!

Guys if you can already do finger spins, which I’m guessing would be a fair few.
Then you need to now learn to get :

  • consistent
  • do fingerspin hops
  • do fingerspin like weaving things
  • do fingerspin spins on different fingers
  • do something different involving finger spins.

Don’t just tick this week off, finger spin is the theme. How much you improve this week is up to you

Unless you don’t know how to finger spin like me and @twitch77, then this is going to be a slow progress week for us lot lol

Here’s my first video of this week. I made some hops, some vortex and I’m trying to fingerspin with the EzSpin at the end, which has a convex surface.

BTW I think that the right yoyo is essential to learn fingerspins without getting frustrated, a flat or even a slightly concave hub may be veeeery difficult to lock your finger. For example the YYF Marco has concave hubs but somehow is the worst yoyo I have for fingerspin, it just does not work. You can also learn it quite well with spikes hubs, I know it is counter intuitive but they work better than flat IMHO.

Anyway, here’s my video for today ,:slightly_smiling_face:

@ChrysaeThrows
Dude you are so good at making videos!

Chrysae also made a video tutorial yesterday for a trick I’ll be using in the future for this trick-a-week challenge…
He says it’s his first tutorial he’s made, but I would’ve never have guessed it…it’s very well done with multiple viewing angles (including a top-down first person perspective) with clear written instructions throughout.
And it’s nice and short too.
Just a really nice video! Looking forward to featuring his trick!!

That was great! I didn’t even get it on a finger last night… i’m hoping to get something on video this week but i’m deff starting from scratch on this one

It’s much easier to finger spin throwing away from your body—much easier to get the angle you want and hop it onto your finger. Give that a try if you were throwing across your body last night.

Also, don’t rush, you can pause a beat before hopping it up. And when you do hop it, be gentle, as it kinda pops up really high with a little tug—not sure about the physics of that :man_shrugging:

OTOH, you can do longer vortex binds throwing left(with normal twist string), because it unwinds the string instead of tightening it—depends a bit on the string, if you’re using a pretty loose twist string it makes less difference. But you can safely ignore that till you can do a finger spin first.

So I’ve learned how to do a fingerspin, but I don’t do them often cuz they just don’t really fit my throw style. So, I’m gonna use this week to get more consistent, and to try and learn the vortex bind.

I think I’m going to try to learn to do a hop from hand to hand, and finish with a vortex. And improve my consistency. I can sometimes do vortex binds that completely unwind the string—not too smart, but other times I leave a little bit of tail on the bind that kills the spin and stability so it doesn’t last long at all.

I found out that the throw does not have to be flat horizontal when it leaves your hand. I throw it bent to the left a little so that it’s flat at the bottom of the string. I’m throwing with the right hand to the right.

That’s exactly how I unwinded the string completely out of the yoyo… :joy: I’ve called this ā€œhorizontal transition 1a to 4aā€

Nice man. Love those hops. Nice vortexes too. I need to be more consistent with all of those things.

I’ve done that too, but I’m kinda hit or miss with vortexes. Any tips for not leaving a tail on the bind? That’s the thing that I have the most trouble with, some strings are much more problematic.

Edit: I’ve also done that quite a few times adjusting string tension too fast so it unwinds the axle loop and the string jumps off, and I’m left holding a spinning yo-yo on a string without it attached to the yo-yo… the only 4a I’ve ever done :joy:

As you may see in my video, what I do is, after lock in the finger, I create a tail behind the yoyo and I keep it far from the yoyo with my nth thumb. Then when I’m ready to bind, I pass the string into the gap and pull it upward creating the vprtex

Here you can see how I do with my thumb

EDIT: does the Instagram link works? First time i link a Instagram video

Thanks. That’s looks much easier than the different ways I’ve been doing it.

Yeah, the link works fine.

What do you shoot your video with?

Also, for anyone else, I’ve been having issues with YouTube degrading my video quality pretty badly. It’s really aggravating. Anyone know how to fix that?

Yeah me too!
Other people seem to have sharp videos. Mine seems really grainy.

Actually I’m using my phone, xiaomi a2, and honestly its camera is very bad compared to other phones. I did not noticed any loss in image quality when uploading to YouTube, videos are produced with PowerDirector in 720p. I don’t know, maybe YouTube has quality limitation for ā€œcasualā€ users, and it degrades hq videos. Just guessing.

Yeah, me too man :(.

I keep producing these freaking AWESOME videos of these super complicated tricks that would blow all ya’lls minds…
But then I upload them to youtube and things get all messed up.
:frowning:
Stupid youtube!!

Yeah I heard YouTube tends to degrade tricks.
Try Insta. It’s capped at 720p so might suit your tricks better :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
