Hey, I get where you’re coming from about scammers—it is frustrating when people ghost on deals or take advantage of trust in a tight-knit community. Nobody wants to lose money or get strung along. But I think in this case, it’s important to slow down before lumping the OP in with fraudsters.

They didn’t come in here bragging about flipping yo-yos or trying to run some hustle—they came in saying they’ve been through a nightmare: husband arrested, house fire, losing pets, losing most of their belongings, and now trying to stay afloat from a hotel. That’s not a fun “cover story,” that’s trauma stacked on trauma. If I was in their shoes, I’d probably be clinging to any little reminder of my partner too—even if it was just a bag of yo-yos—because grief doesn’t always pick logical objects.

I don’t think anyone here is suggesting that deals shouldn’t be honored. Honesty, transparency, and follow-through are what keep this community strong. But I also think compassion has to be part of the equation. If someone is genuinely struggling, we can still hold them accountable and treat them like a human being who’s hurting.

So my two cents: yes, be wary, use safe payment methods, and don’t let scammers ruin this hobby for us. But let’s also not immediately assume the worst about someone who’s clearly going through a rough patch. Sometimes the “clown” is just a person in pain who’s doing their best to keep their head above water.

Well, one of us is certainly missing something, here.

The thread below that was ‘locked’, was locked because this ‘person’ (supposedly going through a rough patch) just happens to have the same ‘IP’ as a well known Scammer… that has no end of creative writing skills.

The predicament is supposed to sound sadly compelling or it wouldn’t draw undeserved placed sympathy.

Did you maybe just happen to miss the post where the Moderator discovered the Sad Patch kid was blowing smoke directly from a Known Scammers’ IP?

Or maybe you just thought that was a coincidence?

Or……… or, maybe she was telling a somewhat factual horror story…. And her boyfriend> the guy that was put in Jail a month ago, might just be the actual Scammer that got caught doing something else Stupid?

I guess that wouldn’t surprise anybody either.

….. After he went to Jail, a month ago, she just missed him so much, she kept his yoyobag in the car with her, because it reminded her of him.

Incredibly fortunate to do that… or they would have been destroyed in the house fire along with the family pets and most everything else in the house.

Dubious at best….

Yeah I guess that’s why you shouldn’t smoke indoors, “Chris” …

Ridiculous that they keep coming back here, I wish they would just get a life. I’m really glad that got spotted, good work team.

It never shocks me the depths the scammers pitty stories can go to. I’m just glad it was caught before more got scammed.

If it’s the same IP from same address then they are still using their home address that supposedly caught fire.. so they aren’t living in a hotel they are just lying to create a compelling story that draws urgency to attract attention from the good natured folks in this community .

Also the prices all looked too good to be true. Basically it was the same as any phishing training fundamentals an adult in an office job is forced to sit through. If it’s urgent and seems off it’s probably not real.

this person also attempted to sell the Same yoyo to several people so they are already determined to be a scammer in my book. There is no sympathy from me even if there is some truth veiled in any of the insanity.

Thank you to the moderator team specifically @jhb8426 for diligently trying to protect the community. Sadly the scammer will probably get smarter after this either use a different location or vpn to try again and come up with a different story. They can also read this thread so we are on the bad end of this where they can manipulate better than we can defend.

Moral of the story please vet your transactions carefully. If the deal seems too good to be true ask for a timestamp with the picture of the yoyo and video of the yoyo spinning. Ask details about transaction history and or who they are family with on the forum for a story of being a proxy for someone on the forum that’s in trouble.

For those with an extensive collection thatb their significant other might have to sell if something happened to them pick a person in the community that you talk to and get their contact info that way you have a trusted person helping your SO sell things off.

Most importantly use g&s if your wary or just don’t do the transaction

Look guys, if I ever go to jail my lady will post from my account trying to scam y’all, not make a new one. This I promise

Walks, talks, and acts like a duck? Must be a goose slingin’ yoyos

This sounds bad but I would be hesitant to buy anything online from someone with this kind of sob story even if it were true. If something else crazy happens in their life the random person who bought a yoyo from them online is not going to be a priority.

Alright, fair enough — looks like I misread the whole situation. Guess I was over here trying to give the “benefit of the doubt” speech while the IP logs and duplicate sales were basically flashing SCAMMER ALERT in neon. My bad on that one.

Nah it’s fine I figured you hadn’t read into the history in this individual and maybe didn’t get the networking thing cause that’s more technical.

I’m rambling was meant as a cybersecurity psa more than anything. Regardless of it being a yoyo or a text from grandma be skeptical

If the yoyos are coming from Dr. Vargabond Filthy, they are going to smell like a house fire. They always do.

Got it — thanks for explaining. I definitely didn’t have the history or the networking angle, so I came in a little blind. Guess I just failed the “spot the phishing attempt” pop quiz.

Perfect, I’ve always wanted my yoyos to come with a smoky patina. Really adds to the resale value.

As someone who used to craft and send those emails most people fail them. Unless mgmt neuters the team and makes us add stuff to make it obvious..

I smell those emails from a mile away. I just scoff at any work email I get like “yeeeah right”
