For those of you who haven’t heard of it, begleri is a skilltoy, that you can use to do various hand tricks. I designed some begleri, and they will be available tonight at 8pm EST right here in the store.
I get asked a lot how begleri compares to yo-yos and yo-yoing. I think they’re very similar in a lot of ways. Begleri is also a skilltoy, it is extremely low maintenance, and there are a few different styles of play. A lot of the begleri made also require the help of machinists and anodizers, just like yo-yos. Also, just like yo-yos, the shape, weight, colors and material, are all a matter of personal preference.
Begleri seems easier to play, because you don’t need as much room to play it. I can flip them in the car, or sitting at my desk at work while on the phone. I only need one hand to do the tricks. Yo-yoing seems to have evolved a lot more, but I think begeri will too, when it catches on more in popularity. If you were thinking of trying a new skilltoy, I think it’s a really easy transition from yo-yoing.
I’m running an Instgram contest for a chance to win a free red set, like the one shown here. The contest is geared toward yo-yoers who want to try begleri. Visit me on IG @TotalArtist for details.
How long are the cords? Most Begleri cords I’ve seen are 6 inches but those look to be a little shorter.
I’ve seen people adjust string length to accommodate their hand size.
Thanks Vegabomb. I’ve been flipping for not quite a year so far. I don’t really play the style in the video, I kinda turn into something else on camera haha. It’s actually a very relaxing thing to do. Some people refer to them as “worry beads” for that reason. I even clack them to the beat of music sometimes, which is pretty fun too. Playing them really does ease the mind. It’s very similar to yo-yoing in that way.
My hands are on the small side, about two and a half inches across the palm. I play a style that’s referred to as “short game.” To do a lot of those roll tricks you see people doing, the cord has to be longer. I could probably be playing that style if I added about an inch to my cord. The cord between the beads for me is 3 and 5/8" and I’m really picky about that hair of an inch too. I prefer begleri to remain a relaxing task, and not turned into a “sport” per se. So, I just do the tricks that seem to come more natural to me, and I don’t want that long cord drawing too much attention. I want to be able to play them anywhere and not look too crazy while doing it out in public. There are lots of different styles of begleri, and there is one guy even putting magnets in them to give it an additional fidget factor. I think it is a hobby that will evolve nicely in the future.
Sometimes I get begleri to match my yo-yos. Yo-Yos wear begleri basically.
I had to order something this unique. I hope you are able to keep production of these of some sort.
I guess we’re curious about the cord length on what we’re buying. You’re right that it ends up being very individual, for sure, when you get a feel for things. I’ve been playing for a few months and definitely about to buy some paracord to better customize the length.
Thanks for your support. I planned to do this as a short term project, but I’m still having fun with it, and the support has been there. So, I’ll definitely consider keeping it going for the long run. It really got fun when I started taking photos of the finished product and promoting them. Honestly, the rest prior to that felt like work. But, it was all worth it in the end.
I included 3 cords total, at least 9.5" each. So, they should last you pretty good. That way, you can set it to your preference.
Yes, those are MFD Prime 8 and Ape Grapes. I also have MFD Gelada, Evil Yo, and 2 Evil with custom anodized Wukong begleri. Ray always customs my begleri to match my MFD yo-yos. He always does gorgeous work.
In person, licorice can’t be beat. What color is that Prescription? I might have some Gumdrops to match. Thanks for considering some candy in your life.
At least prior to seeing the begleri, it does look like a polished product. The candy theme is great and this feels like the kind of finish to a product that elevates something past the usual etsy shop. Definitely the kind of work that pays off!
I’m glad you’re enjoying them, thanks for the great review and for buying a set of course. I included 425 cord, cause that’s what I like best. I figured just like yo-yo string, people ultimately buy the color and type they prefer anyway. But, there’s a little of me in that box too.
I hear you. My other set came with 550 and it’s definitely a hair thicker than I’m really liking, especially after using the gumdrops and trying something thinner.
