The FRS Blunder Bus is the third and final release in Mark Montgomery’s Flat Rim Series. This project represents Mark’s take on a competition-ready organic, built to balance performance, comfort, and fun.
Coming from the early days of yo-yoing, Mark has always favored organic butterfly shapes. They are comfortable in the hand and enjoyable across a wide range of tricks and styles. With the Blunder Bus, the goal was to explore what a “competition organic” could be. Many modern competition yo-yos rely on sharp angle changes or aggressive V-shaped catch zones for maximum stability and spin time, but often at the cost of playfulness. The Blunder Bus aims to find the happiest possible middle ground.

The design process began with the One Drop Gauntlet, one of Mark’s longtime favorites. Using its catch zone profile as a foundation, the shape was refined to hit the target weight and feel. The flat rim element was then introduced with restraint. A thin flat rim was chosen to keep transitions smooth and effortless through technical layers.
Weight distribution proved to be the biggest challenge. Early prototypes used a mid-weight bump inspired by the Cascade to increase spin time and stability. While this worked technically, the yo-yo lacked the ability to shift speed and tempo easily. It was powerful, but the fun factor was not quite there.
The final breakthrough came with a redesigned cup featuring a flowing wave shape. This adjustment transformed the play feel. The Blunder Bus became more dynamic, more responsive to tempo changes, and far more expressive on the string. The result is a yo-yo that feels fun and lively, while still delivering strong stability and long spin times.
The FRS Blunder Bus closes out the Flat Rim Series with a design that blends comfort, control, and character. A serious performer that never forgets to be fun.
