Is there a way to remove the caps on a standard Duncan butterfly without damaging anything too much?

I don’t think so but I bet someone like @EF.n.YOYO would know with how he mods butterfly
The best way I think is still to separate the halves and push through the axle hole. Someone on here had luck separating halves without cracking by using paracord wrapped around the axle. Let me find the reference.
Edit: reference
First step is to disassemble the yoyos to get a blue half and a pink half . this begins with unpackaging, removing the string, and then wrapping your paracord around the gap about 2-3 times.

pull the paracord at both ends away from each other, you are trying to force the cord in to the gap. this will help push the halves apart as it bunches up around the axle…

wrap a couple more times…
