Depending on the color way, the rims can add a UV reactive element so it looks cool and is much more visible using a black light. They can also add an inner rim lip that helps lock in your thumb for thumb grinds without adding much extra weight. If the plastic rim has a greater diameter and/or width than the other materials, it reduces the chance that the metal will be damaged since plastic can absorb damage much better than metal.
This is how the Super Scintillator uses the PC rim, and is (IMHO) probably one of the best implementations of a PC rim.

I’ve tried a bunch at club and thought kinda like how you were thinking at one point and yeah idk lots of the trimaterial yoyos ive tried have been really good. Could they have been really good without doing all that? Yeah probably but trimaterials are cool like the less dense material expands the catch zone w/o warping the weight distro as much like is that minutia? Yeah probably but w/e they are cool and also yeah absolutely not an insane shift or necessary or anything w/e silky pom on skin is nice like it just feels good

Im super new to this, so nothing of value to add to the original question.
But it really is interesting how complex yoyo design is. The more i read, the more impressed i am by the people who create good yoyos.
At first i was under the impression that you pick a shape, pick a material and thats it. Then i figured out rim weight vs center weight and having ledges or tapers im certain places have certain effects. And then it clicked that different materials are used in specific applications because of their weight/density.
Im sure the rabbit hole goes so much deeper and thats really cool. Went from feeling like i could maybe make a yoyo if i had CAD skills and a CNC mill to realizing its so much more involved than that.
Lots of respect to all of the folks much smarter than me who are applying their effortd to pushing the envelope woth yoyo design. We appreciate your work!

Alongside what Mr. MK1 said, whose word i would hold above my own, you can also use plastic to create extra width at the rims without adding that much mass which would vastly impact playability if you just used steel or whatever rim material you were using if it was a bimetal. But yeah for the most part the plastic is used either aesthetically, to reduce noise, or improve protection of the yoyo as dented plastic doesn’t affect play as much as a ding on a metal rim.
