Obsession with Pom rings?

From my perspective and knowledge, I recognized it first on the Onslaught, and then the Savage popularized it.

But now it’s like every brand has to have that Tri-material PC/POM ring yoyo in their catalog (specifically PC/POM pressed on a outer rimmed bi-metals ring like the Onslaught).

Now I’m not saying I dislike that they’re doing this, but my question becomes,

Is it really a superior design style, or just the latest trend?

Also, I give kudos to brands that do it a little differently at least like Dis Yoyo Obscura, I specifically mean the ones that do it the Onslaught way.

What’s yall’s opinion? :black_heart:

I like the look, I can see the argument about feel, but the durability seems like an open question.

Some of the seemingly inside-out weight distributions are curious, e.g. metal core with huge PC/POM rims.

Edit to add: I think PC/POM can be very durable on their own, but there seems to be a tipping point when combined with larger metal components.

Trung with the short answer XD

See but this is a little different because its just alu+POM/PC.

I mean the ones like this

Right. That Organ is just part of a broader influx of plastic components.

I’ve heard a few functional arguments in favor of the tri-materials:

More width with less weight to re-distribute, which gets more true with more extreme wings like the Super Scintillator Universe.

Protects the steel rim from damage, which seems questionable if the tradeoff is a destroyed plastic component vs. a dinged metal component. I read a claim that Sybil rims could be popped back on, so maybe there is something to it.

But the Organ does remind me of some claims that the density of plastic at the rim provides a performance benefit, which seems at least a little questionable.

All that said, the “mint” POM on that Contrast kind of sells me on the entire concept, downsides be danged.

I think durability is questionable ye because its like plastic/pom, even tho pom is a bit stronger, both material can crack, so to say its to protect the ss is interesting.

Side note, thats not the Contrast, that is Lin Junyi sig the “Reticle”

I just assumed it was this Contrast, but I see the difference now. I love the colors, either way.

I don’t really play 5A so I don’t really factor durability features that much (other than axle length).

The extreme examples of width and diameter where the lower density is useful make the most sense to me. Designs where metal would be come too heavy or even more fragile than a more substantial chunk of plastic.

And it does look cool a lot of the time.

I’ve just seen so many yoyos do it the way in the previous pics I sent. So it’s just like, there’s something I don’t know about this design style yet aha.

It does seem to have become the feature to have. I guess it’s a good seller.

Seems to coincide with a lot of higher-priced yo-yos. I wonder if the “tri-material” construction is driving up costs, or if it is just a sweetener to make these yo-yos palatable at the price they need to sell for. Neither would bother me.

Funny too cause I just started using the savage again.

Another example would be the new aftermath and cognizance yoyos

W1LD is putting a lot of that money into players and the scene in general. I’d gladly give them my cash if they would rein in the widths on a few of these. . .

Savage 55 is the only one I have in this style, and that was purely for the novelty (at the time).

I don’t know about the merit of most yoyo gimmicks, beyond being aesthetically pleasing.

Welll when you ready to move that savage55 pm me XD, I literally made a post looking for one lol. I only tried it once at a meet, but I was like oh, 55mm width might be the perfect middle ground

It’s pretty cool, but I can’t really compare it to much else. I figure it is good enough that I can miss a lot of the similar designs that have been introduced since. (Same with the Handcrush.)

I’ll trade you my handcrush for it:smirking_face::smirking_face::smirking_face::smirking_face::wink::wink::wink:

That’s one I did buy. Regular Savage is the only one I never tried.

Edit: Little Savage is actually my favorite so far
