When designing yoyos what are the best aspects (width, height, weight) to keep in mind and what combinations of traits make for good styles (smooth, stable, techy)?

You can have the best design in the world, without a talented machinist or injection mold maker the design can easily fail. Making a yoyo is as much art as it is science.
