Yeah I just vigourously shake in a container with the solvent. I suppose Ill try the water method next time! I just cleanes some bearings yesterday😅

yea i started adding in a soap and water step recently but i do it a little diff. i also had experiences similar to @hsb in that soaking and agitation wasnt doing it, but i actually use dish soap to fully break all the oils and a small brush i scrub it under the faucet, rinse it really well, then soak in acetone for 5 min to overnight, then spin out and let dry. been successful without reservation so far. i know in the past when i hadn’t done the water step i wouldda just called a bearing a loss and chucked it
I was swapping side effects for aesthetics as I usually find they all feel pretty similar, but I found I actually do prefer the play of the Deepest State with ultralights.
I’m going to try the water thing. I usually soak the bearings in acetone, but if the agitation of water works, I’m definitely going to try that on some stubborn bearings.
The most noticeable change with side effects for me is after keeping them in a yoyo for about a month, and having that be a daily throw. I throw my boosted rainier a ton, and that’s the one that I notice the most when I switch them out. I like flat caps a lot, and switching to ultralights after a month definitely changes the feel subtly, as well as going to brass.
id be interested to hear if you have the same experience. but again i do use dish soap cuz that stuff is amazing at breaking oil and grease at the molecular lvl. i worked in a dry cleaner during college and any time a grease or oil stain showed up, break out the dawn
Any time I get a grease stain on clothing (one time a pen that was washed in a t shirt) dawn and a toothbrush, brushing both inside and outside of the garment saves the day. The stuff is INCREDIBLE. ![]()

I may just try this. I’ve found on cleaning bearings for my fishing reels that a good degrease is very handy. I’ve been using mineral spirits which works great… but it stinks and I’d feel much more environmentally conscious if I were simply flushing dirty Dawn down the sink…![]()
that sounds funny.
Dawn is what I use to clean my truck floor mats too! It’s amazing stuff as a general cleaner for parts
Someone should make a dish soap appreciation thread. I’d read that’s stuff. For the most part I use the Kirkland soap that is probably rebranded dawn.
I feel the same. I may try to find some red Microcaps. ![]()
I’m really liking the Greasebucket as well. I’ve been making my own greased bearings for a while and these behave very similar to mine. They have that snappy amazing response you love, but they also have higher RPM and spin time as well. Not quite dry bearing levels but at a very nice compromise. I don’t know how they did it but I know how I do it. I won’t tell here because I’d rather just say that the Greasebucket is an excellent option for those who want a long lived pre-lubed bearing with an amazing response for no more than you pay for any other quality bearing. It’s much less mess. ![]()

Blast ‘em with Brākleen and hit em with some shop air, just don’t spin too fast or you’ll melt the cage… once it goes subsonic, ya gotta let off
Brake clean is legit. Agitates and evaporates.
I hate using brake cleaner that stuff absolutely kills me. That and any form of anti seize as it instantly gets on my face no matter what I’ve done to prevent it.
One time many years ago I was balancing a set of tires. We use Gum Cutter or Brākleen to clean the wheels to apply stick on weights. The wheel is tightened down into a spindle so it can be spun up and checked for imbalance. Well, as I was loosening a wheel to take it off the machine, it tilted over and pinned down a can of Gum Cutter and sprayed a good 2-3 seconds of full blast Gum Cutter directly to the face, up my nose, in my eyes, it was like instantaneous disorientation for 15 min, I was MESSED TF UP. never felt anything like that, instantly dried out my skin and nose, and felt drunk AF immediately, it was WILD. Burned like hellfire
the auto world has some gnarly chemicals. when i was younger my old man was restoring a '67 cougar. he had pulled the engine and was stripping the compartment to repaint. at some point he went back under it for something and right as he looked up a glob of paint stripper laden paint that he missed fell directly in his eye. after a THOROUGH rinsing and lots of screaming he was ok and retained his sight but yea…safety goggles…pro tip
Dang that sounds miserable.
Oh my GOD, paint stripper is SO GNARLY, that’s like worst of the worst chems in my field, super strong acid, I’m surprised he didn’t go blind.
It’s a rough field, I almost lost a finger bench stripping a 383 out of an old roadrunner so it could be rebuilt. As I was pulling the pistons out the weight shifted and nearly cut my finger off between the block and the piston, horrible horrible pain, that finger still hurts time to time and that was nearly 15 years ago… so, so many incidents like this I have forgotten most of them lol
Yeah friends: don’t let your kids grow up to be mechanics.
But yeah, how bout that Deep State tho?
