Ceramic yoyo…?

has anyone heard or attempted to make one out of ceramic?

I study ceramics as a full time student and i’ve been thinking about this since i learned about glass fixies…

idea has been fermenting for a few months, i know glass blowing is a different game but would be pretty cool to see a clayoyo

would love some ideas or any pointers for constructing fixed axles in general.

here’s some of my hand built stuff:D

i typically love throwing on the wheel but i wanted to focus on hand building for a semester

The YAGI YOYO TEAM (not entirely sure who leads this but my understanding is it’s a performance group made up of a bunch of YYR people and some friends like takumi hakamata, toru miyazaki, ayumu harada, sota aoyagi, etc.) recently released one actually, they worked with a ceramics manufacturer in japan to make 50 of them.

I’ve seen porcelain 3d print filament that needs kiln fired to sinter it and have wanted to try it out.

Honestly… I’ve also looked at clay 3d printers too and hotly debated with myself about the idea of purchasing one. In the end spending $500 on a tronxy to try to foolishly make a clay yoyo ended up being determined to be a bad investment so I didn’t do it…. Yet.

Some bandalores from Ancient Greece were made of clay. It’s definitely possible. I imagine it would be difficult to perfect, however. My uncle is a professional potter, I will see if he has any thoughts on the matter

hmmm hypothetically, but its finicky to set up, never used it personally but i’ve seen a friend print a really weird vase but you can see all the layers as they’re just micro coils

Sounds like a poorly tuned machine with a bad z offset or a really large nozzle which may be needed for that kind of printing to be honest not sure how that would work. Either way that would be super neat to see

Ahh so it prints in… vase mode (badumtisss) sorry 3d printer joke.

I will now ruin the joke and explain that vase mode on 3d printers prints in continuous loops which sounds like what you are describing.
