It’s ironic that you make this post because for the past 5 months yoyoing I have been throwing a breakaway the way they teach beginners by making a muscle. I learned both ways when I started, but I was lazy and stuck with the muscle method of throwing a breakaway since it was much easier. I have been putting off switching over to the proper doorknob method. I finally decided to switch over the other day. It’s kind of frustrating relearning to throw a breakaway after all this time, but it’s coming along pretty quickly at least. It’s going to take some getting used to.

Is the doorknob method supposed to be the right one?

I don’t think there is a wrong way, just pick what you prefer.

In the yotricks and Brandon vu videos they refer to it proper. I don’t really mean to use that term to make it sound better. I posted it somewhere else with proper in quotations. I just like the way it looks more. Brandon vu says that it helps throw breakaways more consistently straight I’m not sure about that yet though still working on it. Im hoping it does.

I almost always just stick with what I already know how to do pretty well, and rarely try new stuff and get easily discouraged as a lefty with how unnatural following some of the more complex tricks can feel!

Another thing I don’t do, like ever, is change strings. I actually prefer old strings I’ve found. Something about their lack of springiness is nice even though they are less comfortable. I also don’t think they negatively affect slack tricks that much.

Not right, just faster spin with the doorknob method. Using the string to whip into a breakaway adds another point of leverage making the yoyo unwind faster. It might just be in my head, but it seems like I attain maximum spin when the yoyo is still unwinding and I intercept the string for a trapeze. Another slingshot point right at the end of unwind.
I actually learned it by throwing with a counterweight. 5a almost forces the doorknob style breakaway.
