BobParty’s Player Profile: Sean Collins - GWay Throws

Morning everyone!

Trying something a little bit different today, and please let me know what you think.

Along with Player Profiles, I’m going to start doing Company Profiles!

I wanted to start highlighting the amazing, passionate companies that we all know and love. Getting to know how they formed, what their best memories of their business are, and what’s in store for the future.

I am starting this part of the series off with one of my favorite MK1 YoYo’s!!!

Instagram

How did the idea for MK1 come about?

I was learning how to design yoyos for fun, and Jordan Blofeld (Smashing yoyos, OP Yoyos) challenged me to make something that people wanted to buy. That ended up being the Diffraction.

I created the MK1 branding to make it feel more legitimate. It was originally styled as Mk.I - meaning “Mark 1”, or version 1. I only intended to release just the 1 yoyo at first, but I had a lot of fun with the whole process so I kept working on new ideas.

What does a day in the life look like for you running Mk1 YoYo?

I don’t “run” it daily. I have spurts of creative energy where I draft/design/finish a couple yoyo ideas, or I work on logos, packaging, or other bits that go into making a yoyo.

I have a checklist that I work through for preparing a new release, and once everything is ready I place all the orders for things I need. The busiest time is leading up to a release - coordinating retailer orders, social media posts, website setup, and email marketing - and usually a week or so after a release I can get back to the slow cadence of normality.

Walk me through your creative process.

Yoyo concepts can come from a couple places - either a shape I saw or imagined, or an idea one of my team members had, or a market niche that I want to find something for. I do most of my work digitally, first drafting in FreeCAD and then checking visuals in Blender to see if the design has both the numerical and aesthetic features I am looking for.

Recently I am also trying to spend more time linking together the concept/yoyo/colorway/name into something cohesive. This usually means custom packaging, which is a whole separate big design process.

What’s your favorite memory of running Mk1?

Meeting tons of cool people at the US National yoyo contest, and seeing part of my team (and sometimes future team members) in person.

What’s your favorite release to date?

The Ring-Bearer. I got to work on something that I didn’t even realize was possible until I emailed Middle-Earth Enterprises. Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit have been special to me since I was little. The yoyos came out beautifully and I’m excited to work more with this license in the future.

What’s your next release and what makes it so exciting?

The Asterisk, a signature yoyo for EOS44. It’s always really cool working on a signature or collaboration yoyo - a lot of my best work has been with a tight feedback loop with another person. The design for this yoyo is 90% EOS, though.

Feedback on the prototypes has been really positive, and the packaging that me and EOS designed together has a lot of really cool & fun details.

What’s in store for Mk1 in the future?

Probably more Lord of the Rings themed stuff.

Definitely more tug-responsive yoyos.

Plenty of exciting collabs!

If you could go back and do one thing differently what would that be?

Order more of the PK Sliver colorway the first time around.

What sets Mk1 apart from others?

One of my long-term goals is to elevate yoyo-design as a discipline. I’ve done some work with this in the form of tutorial series and freely-available design files, but there’s much more work to do!

Any advice for aspiring companies/creators?

Plan out your costs & sales estimates in a spreadsheet. Use very conservative estimates so that you don’t get surprised.

I have only a limited exposure to @MarkD ‘s lineup of throws but what I have is purely top shelf. 2 collabs; the Red Blood Cell and the Metal Harbinger are both just amazing responsives that need no introduction or explanation as they’ve both reached near legendary station in the community. The Lord of the Rings partnership however, is epic. The effect of the news of this just rippled through the community and there was no disappointment. What a fine piece of history, artwork, and just a very fine yo-yo. Great write up. Thanks Mark for your contributions to the community. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Instagram

What got you into throwing, how long have you been in the hobby?

I have been yoyoing for over 20 years. Long story short, I got into yoyoing because of depression. I was bullied, chased, and always teased for being fat. Yoyoing became that outlet that brightened my life up and assured me my life isnt so bad.

What trick are you working on currently and what is your all time favorite trick?

Reverse Neck Stole. its REALLY HARD! All time favorite trick is the Quintuple or Nothing.

What’s your favorite yo-yo of all time?

YoYoJam Dark Magic.

What’s the most meaningful throw you have?

Special Edition Danny Severance Freehand. Forever a legend. RIP

What’s kind of things are you into outside of yo-yos?

I love making hiphop music. I have several albums and music videos I have dropped in the past 10 years.

Favorite foods?

Cheeseburgers of any size and shape with fries.

Favorite movie?

Forest Gump. Thats my life pretty much lol

What’s your Yo-yo bad habit?

I switch my string out after 2 minutes of playing. The string is FAR from dirty, but I don’t care. I’ve wasted thousands of dollars on string for this reason.

As a musician how do you feel yo-yo’s express your art in your performances?

It coincides with everything. I can speak with my hands through yoyoing like I’m rapping on tracks. There’s a message and you can’t help but want to pay attention and listen to what’s going on.

Best yoyo memory?

Meeting AJ Kirk at the first New York State Yo-Yo Contest/IYYO. It was like meeting a celebrity for the first time. Ill never forget that moment when he shook my hand and wanted to teach me a cool Green Triangle trick.

What’s it been like to watch the growth of the community?

It’s been beautiful. I remember the hardest trick to do was an Iron Whip. Now its Neck Stole lol. Its also great to see players that ive looked up to still out here doing their thing in yoyoing. Its only going to continue to grow especially with players being only 8 years old and placing really high in Pro divisions.

Advice to new players?

Its okay to not be okay. Your gonna fail at alot of attempts for tricks. FAIL BIG for a STRONG WIN.

What do you want to tell the world?

I have a new album coming out very soon. My first single will be a yoyo dance song. Hope you all support it. PEACE LOVE AND YOYOS TO YOU ALL!

Happy Tuesday everyone!!

Today we are up with a company profile of one of my favorite companies! Canopy Collection!!

Instagram

How did the idea for Canopy Collection come about?

It was a crazy idea born over a post-concert Thai meal and inspired by a stainless steel tumbler.

I wrote more about our beginnings here:

What does a day in the life look like for you running Canopy Collection?

Every day varies quite a bit—the busyness comes and goes. No two days are the same. One day, we might be deep in CAD, fine-tuning a design, and the next, we’re figuring out logistics for an event.

For context, a small team of us are building the brand behind the scenes. We’re all working on it part-time, balancing other commitments or jobs on the side—so it’s definitely been a juggling act.

Walk me through your creative process.

It depends—ideas come from different sources, both internally and externally. For our first year, we used the technical outdoors as a guiding theme. Outdoor brands often release product variations optimized for different use cases. Similarly, in yo-yo design, while top players can perform their full trick sets on most modern yoyos, the differences lie in the details—shape, weight distribution, and how each design caters to different playstyles.

We set out to create a universal shape that balanced competition and casual play, drawing inspiration from The Otter and the Atmos Polaris, but use material as our primarly lever. The question became: how could we use materials to enhance performance for different use cases while maintaining a consistent shape and design?

What’s your favorite memory running Canopy?

Definitely Stargazing Night! Specifically, seeing Polo beat Zach in the preliminary round of the battle. It surpassed any and all expectations we had as a team.

With the event, we wanted to create something that focused on the community—its creativity and diversity—and celebrate the people who make it so special. We aimed to build a space where everyone felt welcomed and included, while also placing creativity, originality, and musicality at the forefront.

Really grateful for how the event was received!

What’s your favorite release to date?

Personally, the Canopy SS. But I’m biased—this one most closely resembles The Otter. It has a quickness and agility that are surprising for its undersized specs.

What’s your next release, and what makes it so exciting? What’s in store for Canopy Collection in the future?

We have a handful of things planned, but we’re keeping them quiet for now.

If you could go back and do one thing differently, what would it be?

Looking back, not much we’d do differently. We’ve made a ton of mistakes over the last year, but we wouldn’t be where we are today without them—and the lessons they brought! So grateful.

Any advice to aspiring companies/creators?

Just get something out into the community’s hands and learn from their feedback! Even if it’s just a concept or a rough sketch on a napkin. There were so many times we hesitated to release something, but the community is incredibly supportive.

And find a good team to work with!

Happy Monday everyone!!!

Today we have the one, the only, Jack Hudspath!!!

What got you into throwing, how did you find the hobby

I got into yo-yos through finding yotricks tutorials on YouTube! I just kept watching them and annoyed my parents enough to get me a velocity

What’s your favorite yo-yo of all time?

My favorite yoyo might be the Ringbearer as just one of the coolest yo-yos to me. It’s just so aweosme it exists and it is also fun lol

Trick that gives you the hardest time?

I am so very bad at whip tricks they are hard

What’s your Yo-yo bad habit?

My yoyo bad habit is changing strings too much I do it like multiple times a day

What’s the most meaningful throw you have?

Most meaningful is The Path. I’m just very honored to be able to have helped make a yoyo it is still awesome

What was it like designing The Path, your signature yo-yo?

It was a blast! It took a long time because I came into it not really understanding what I wanted out of the yoyo so we took a few prototypes to find that. It was overall really just gratifying to see the final result and being satisfied with it

Favorite restaurant and order?

I don’t think I have a favorite restaurant but I do like soup

Favorite movie and or Book?

I really like the lord of the rings movies and also the books! I love David Lynch’s catching the big fish as well

What does yo-yo mean for you?

Yoyo to me is a form of performance art but it also is something you can put effort into and immediately see reflected back

What’s it been like to watch the growth of the community?

It’s been amazing watching the growth of the community and especially of my friends within it. It just makes me smile

If you couldn’t yo-yo what would you be doing?

I would be making music and possibly writing, I would also be way more lazy

Advice/ words of wisdom to new players

New players the best thing you can do is just play with yo-yos and to not be afraid to just talk to people in the community

What movie or book character best fits who you are?

I think I really relate to that robot from treasure planet

What do you want to tell the world?

I want to tell the world that the Reuben from Arby’s isn’t that bad honestly
