best beginner yoyo for my little bro

hey im buying a beginner yoyo for my lil bro (Age 20, haha) for xmas… and i wanna know which under $20 yoyo is the best… like i want one that is low maintenance (no pad changing) and can switch from responsive to unresponsive easily…

i was lookiung at the Journey, or the Velocity or the FAST… any help is appreciated

I really like the velocity, so my suggestion would be to go for that.

definitely the velocity v3, very good beginner yoyo, you can start off responsive then just turn the dials to turn down the response, it’s stable and he’ll be able to work a long way with it.
but get your borther a pack of 10 or 20 extra strings, these tend to wear out fast

you could also check out the free hand zero or the lyn fury. the lyn fury is real nice but is pretty much unresponsive. check out what duncan has too

I’d pick a yoyojam _____, because the rubber O-ring lasts much longer than my duncan FH2’s sticker (assuming it’s the same sticker as in the freehand zero).

I may be a minority, but I like regular plastic more than celcon, because celcon feels too soft for me.
My vote’s for the Journey, because I like O-rings more than starburst. It’s also less expensive than the velocity. The extra $$ could be spent on shims, an extra set of O-rings, tube of flowable silicone, thin lube, or strings.
I also like the paper yoyojam shims more than the metal, because they fit snugly.

You could also try the Lyn Fury if you’re into celcon.

YYF Starlite might also be fun.

Yomega yoyos are also responsive, but use proprietary bearing/response/axle/spacers/everything.

Looping yoyos are also fun and in that price range.

The YYJ kickside will be great. You can play it stock, and it has hybrid response. Hybrid response last very long and give nice tight binds.Review of the Yoyojam Kickside by Mi - Yo-Yo Reviews - YoYoExpert heres a review of the kickside. If you dont like the response your could silicone the o-ring side. Hybrid response is half star burst, half o-ring.

can the kickside play both respons and unrespons?

Well you cant switch, but what you can do is buy some thick lube, and that will keep it responsive, but if you wnt it unresponsive you can clean the bearing.

i started on the velocity. i really like how you can change the response. plus its only 20$. good deal!

do yourself a favor (well, your brother, but yourself as well)

avoid the FAST

  • it’s loud (really, VERY loud)
  • it eats strings
  • the starbursts will not help a beginner player

I started on a FAST 201

get a velocity V3, they come with silicone pads, are fairly light (your brother is eventually going to shoot it to his own face at some point, he’ll thank you then for picking a light plastic yoyo)

it spins really well, I mean REALLY well, the increased gap (compared to the older versions) makes it very easy to land on the string, and the spin time, even out of a beginner throw, is plenty enough to get you through advanced level tricks (but he’s probably going to have a few other ones by the time he gets there)

Adjustable response works great and it looks pretty decent

many people who tried it say it’s likely to be one of the most impressive yoyos for under 20$, you really can’t go wrong with it

YYJ Lynn fury is also a great beginner throw, probably a tad bit harder to get started on, it all comes down to how persistent your brother is.

if he wants to go easy with an easy to play yet performant yoyo, get a velocity (V3)
if you think he will be more committed to it and that he will not get discouraged from the early fails, get him a lynn fury

can’t talk about the others, I didn’t have the occasion to try em. But all those who got mentioned seem like pretty standard beginner throws, can’t really go wrong with either one of em.

The thing about the velocity is that it uses k pads, k pads will fall out if you play enough, if you do get a velocity i would recommend buying extra pads.

Yeah Velocity is great. BUT, if you don’t want to have to get pads, try to find a V.1 on the B/S/T.

Plays SO much better than the new ones, what with the extra weight and all.

You might want to look into a lyn fury.

Lyn fury with some polyester string

I’m going to recommend the kickside

I would say Kickside or Velocity. The kickside is very nice, and the velocity is also. And about the V.1 Velocity I think davidyo is selling one.

i think im going with the Journey or Kickside… can the Journeybe played unresponsive? or is it just responsive?

It can be made to be unresponsive.
You can silicone it, clean the bearing and shim it out to advanced play standards.

Velocity it responsive and can turn to unresponsive and can pretty handle much of advanced yoyo tricks

Here’s a velocity yoyo played by Jensen kimmet

Like ive said before, the K pads will fall out in a month or 2.Almost all yoyos can be made unresponsive.
Any one of the plastic YYJ yoyos will be great for a begginer.
