Beginner Slack Trick Tutorials

Hey everyone! The past month I’ve really been focusing on trying to learn techy type tricks that incorporate slack and rejection elements. Some of us have been discussing it in another thread, but thought it would be fun to start a new thread to post beginner tutorials in. Just a way to consolidate it all and keep it on topic.

Here’s some I’ve been trying this past week. A few of them I’ve got, and others I’m still trying to figure out.

And this one recommended by @hsb

If anyone has some more basic beginner friendly tutorials that fit this general vibe, please share!

Thought I’d add this one in as well from TAW Week 27:

A couple rejection triangles:

These are a little harder but not too bad

Adding this one. It’s a bit more complicated but definitely doable. Just a few more steps than the others.

I’m in. Slacks scare me. Let’s get them figured out together @GnarlyCharlie

we can do it!

Wow some of these are really sick and clean looking

I love slacks. They just look so clean.
I just suck at them :joy:

I’m 100% learning a couple of these fs

Slacks are not a monolith where they all fit together really. There are slacks like yuuki slack or cheese whip, where you’re pinching the string. There are slacks where you’re hopping the Yoyo up and whipping to make a slack while the Yoyo doesn’t have gravity to pull the slack out like hooks and other lacerations or tension hooks and rejections where the slack catches the Yoyo. Even within these categories there’s a ton of different ways mechanically that the slacks work. I just wanted to say this bc I don’t think it’s helpful to categorize all slacks together like some are so different than each other.

Generally, I think y’all should definitely not fear slacks or put them on a pedestal or anything. Lots of slacks are pretty easy and can be learned without much struggle. Usually the ones where you pinch and whip the string and can mostly ignore the Yoyo. The harder ones are where you’re not pinching and have a brief moment to form the slack and catch the Yoyo with it.

Here’s a combo with a few simpler slacks that highlights how different slacks can be. I think this first one is a great place to start for anyone intimidated by slacks. You just pinch and whip the string so that it goes under and around and back into the gap. Switches from trapeze to an undermount.

Keychain style slacks are also pretty beginner friendly and look cool and feel really good. This one is one of my favorites.

I’ve gotten the first slack in Yuuki Slack (not sure if it’s called something else on its own), Trapeze Slack, and Brother Slack. These are all very easy slack tricks. I made a video but not a tutorial. There are good tutorials out for these though.

I’ve been struggling with this first video first rejection part and landing it properly or looping it properly on the yo-yo. (Whatever the proper term is)

It took me days to figure out what is the result to be able to pop it up onto the top string and then swing around to the G T.

So now at least I can wrap it to get the second part GT ending if I don’t land the rejection.

I’m super inconsistent on the landing the rejection part. I can reject it but it lands open on the string a majority of the time, or I miss the landing string entirely..

Any suggestions would help

Thanks guys.

there will be tips ppl can prob offer generally but it’s always much easier to troubleshoot problems if you can film and post a couple of attempts

Yeah definitely film some attempts if possible.

Generally though, you don’t want to expect the string to just catch the Yoyo automatically. You want to aim the slack after the rejection and catch the yoyo with it. Feels pretty similar to an underwhip and you can practice just underwhip ing like I show in the vid and that could help. Make sure you are gripping the string with th middle ring and pinkie also to open up space and turning the hand over. Also make sure to hop the yoyo up when you reject but dont go above the strings on nth bc you shouldn’t be landing ontop of those.

Thanks guys I appreciate the response and I think it may have to do with turning my hand palm up with the rejection.
Even though it is or seems simple it is tricky. even so when you spin the last part before the GT if you dont keep tension it knots up. :man_facepalming:

Yeah this trick is annoying. Here’s a similar trick I like better personally like I think it looks cooler and is less awkward to do.

I like that one. I’ll see if I can learn it.

I’ve been trying to learn this one for like a year now. I can never get the rejection to whip around enough to catch it.

The rewind trick? Also wow! That is a very long time to work on a trick without asking to see if anyone has any tips.

Keep TH thumb very close to the yoyo and keep the string completely vertical like 12-6 and then push the string into the wall of the yoyo; towards yourself. Adding a little upwards hop by lifting both hands as you reject can give you a bit of extra time to catch the string. Be ready to catch the string with your thumb. Make sure to keep the string vertical when you push into it and the spin of the yoyo will pop the string off and around.

Sending a video of some attempts of the trick could help ppl spot what you’re doing wrong.

Maybe your proportions are off? Hqving the yoyo closer to th will get a stronger rejection and closer to nth will give a bigger slack but harder to get a powerful rejection.

GT’s vid helped me get 50-70% of the rejection wrap around ( compared to like 10% before)
I was thinking it was how you open up your TH then pinch- I still can’t get that part yet, but having the shorter string over your TH pointer and popping up higher and focusing on the yo being outside of the horizontal string gave me the higher success rates.
I put the video on .5 and focused on one thing, when I couldn’t get the open hand thing I was not even rejecting, so I went back and saw how high he pops it.

Maybe this will help someone else struggling.
Thanks for posting this video GTDK.

PS I thought about changing my name here to something similar because I knotted up sooo sooo many times learning this one.
