About AI Usage

Hello all! As a relatively new thrower, I’ve been keeping track of new releases on yoyoexpert because I like looking at yoyos.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the descriptions for every new product on the YYE store have telltale signs of ChatGPT usage (emdash, “it’s not just”, etc). It also seems to me that existing product descriptions from brands are being run through ChatGPT, probably to summarize them.

I wonder if it’s a product of a feature On the shop platform. I know allot of platforms are forcing AI into everything they can.

Do you have an issue with the accuracy of the descriptions? Or some other aspect of their quality?

Personally, I appreciate notice that content is the product of automated summarization. But for promotional text, it’s not a big concern for me. Especially if the output is short enough to be plausibly reviewed for faithfulness to the original (a ubiquitous requirement with “AI” that I suspect is often ignored).

@hsb It makes my eye twitch when I read ai generated copy. It also makes me think of the negative effects that LLMs have had on humanity and how so many people have given up their brains to what is essentially a next word predictor. Ofc that may be too heavy for this forum.

I wonder how people who sell their yoyos through YYE feel when the product description they spent an hour on gets run through ChatGPT until it’s unrecognizable

it take an employee or the company owner providing YYE the yoyo 10 minute to summarize a yoyo both party will make hundreds or thousands of dollars from. my team have built thousands of product pages for ecom sites

to me, how would a computer ai know any of this, it all sounds made up, ,might as well leave description empty if it is all just fake fairy tale assumptions by a robot. i am sure/hope they list the traits of the yoyo into the ai and have it build something around that. still sucks to have to read lol

Honestly describing a yoyo is hard anyway. It’s a ball of metal on a string that we learned to make do cool stuff.

Too accurate. It’s saying a lot about nothing in particular. It’s describing how basically any modern metal YoYo plays, using flowery language that conveys nothing.

That said, as mentioned, it’s really really hard to say anything original about how a YoYo plays

I feel that way about most sales/marketing copy anyway. But it is just a facet of selling things that I concede has it’s role.

These are valid concerns. Personally, I think that “AI” will fail to earn become profitable and many of these smaller uses will simply disappear without enterprise grade implementations to justify the overall costs of technology.

Many times, the original product description is even worse. I’m not sure I can fault someone for resorting to an automated summary.

If I ever released a yoyo design, the copy would just be “ it kicks ■■■, buy one already. Or don’t, I don’t care”

And this is why I am not a product manufacturer

I went to manufacturer’s site for that yo-yo and across 7 versions I couldn’t find any attempt to characterize how the yo-yo plays. There is a lot of info about the colorways and a long blog post which includes:

The success of the INERTIA was a weird one for me. We actually only created one reel with Zafran on the yo-yo, which didn’t really blow up - but somehow the INERTIA sold like hotcakes. At EP6 we sold over 100 pieces - at an event where people don’t really buy yo-yos. There was something about it that made people really want one. Perhaps it was the attractive price point of USD 65, or just the colorways. But anyway, back to Xavier.

Seems like a human wrote that, but I am no more edified about the properties of the actual yo-yo.

People clearly look to the product descriptions on YYE, and I am betting that leaving them blank would not be considered an improvement. At the same time, providing a nuanced description of a new product when even the brand doesn’t provide one is a tough ask.

I’m not a fan of "AI”, but I am not sure that I see a good option here.

Personally, while this may or may not be A.I., I feel like this has in general been an issue with yoyo product descriptions in general, where they all kind of say that they’re good at everything, sometimes to a contradictory level.

Take this description of the YYFr Armageddon:
“After countless discussions and testing, the team landed on the perfect specs: 57mm diameter with a massive 53mm width. This combination gives the Armageddon a commanding presence on the string, making zoning and body tricks more accessible, while still maintaining balance for intricate tech play.”

This is kind of ridiculous to me… I haven’t tried this particular yoyo, but I have used ones with very similar specs, and they were most definitely NOT good for “intricate tech play,” which seems pretty obvious when you think about it. Which is okay, not every yoyo needs to be for everyone! But in writing descriptions like these, where they basically say “yeah this yoyo is perfect for everything” it makes it much harder for the buyer to figure out what yoyos they might actually enjoy. I have a bit of experience behind me, so I have a general idea of what I might enjoy, but it’s still helpful to have an accurate description, which seems to be less and less common these days. Yoyo reviews have also become less common and less descriptive, which exacerbates the problem.

LMAO, I just saw the posting for the Inertia (which is a great yoyo btw) and saw an even more fitting example of this self-contradictory-ness:

“The true innovation lies in its hybrid construction — precision polycarbonate rims fused to the aluminum body. This design shifts mass strategically to the outer edge for maximum spin power while maintaining a light, comfortable feel on the string.”

Using polycarb rims literally does the exact opposite! It’s less dense than aluminum! It adds width without proportionally increasing rim weight!

Seriously, things to that level are just innacurate and borderline unnaceptable.

I take the claims that 50mm+ wide yo-yos are compatible with tech to simply be a reassurance that tech is not impossible, which I think is accurate enough. (Ideal? No.) I don’t think someone into tech is going to buy one and be disappointed.

Yeah. This is not accurate at all.

It also reminds me of a Japanese-language video I was watching where people were discussing polycarbonate in yo-yos. They were abbreviating it to “PC”, and the translated captions kept losing the plot and hallucinating about PC gaming.

Idk I also am aware yye has had a long backlog of stuff to release over the years so this might be a way to reduce effort without hiring another person so they can keep prices similar but still have the content. I mean yeah Erick is great but also it’s hard to articulate something so subjective.

YYE also will AI summarize the yoyo desc even if you give it to them.. just go compare the h5 x leaf description on the yoyo samuel and here. One is obviously an AI summary of the other.

I want YYE to do better, I’ve honestly bought from other retailers over this.

YYE add like 1 yoyo a week to store. that is 10 minutes employee time per week to write personally, 1-2 hour could write 3 months worth of release descriptions
