2015 Battle of the Elders (30+) - People's Choice winners p23

Tried to do some filming yesterday and today. However when you put me in front of my camera, my throwing goes way downhill. We will see how this goes.

When and where will we see videos? All after the deadline?

Contestants are welcome to post their videos whenever they want to. But I suspect a lot of them will want to hold their cards close to their chest until near the end.

Maybe I should have a “Bravery” prize. Anybody who submits a video before the 23rd gets entered into a special draw…

Lord knows I have a lot of prizes to give away. I just did a new total with the latest (complete) information, and with a few teeny tiny exceptions (couldn’t find a price; exact model from sponsor brand not identified yet), the total is pretty accurate. +/- 2% I would say.

And that total is way beyond the “Over $1500” mentioned in the poster…

I’ve got $2,444 worth of prizes that I need to find good homes for.

Back to the original question, though: there’s no obligation to have the videos available for viewing until after the deadline. The judges will of course be given a decent amount of time to go through the videos and assign their scores. During that time the videos could be released, though.

For the People’s Choice, as I recall it was awarded to someone who didn’t win in the main competition. I’m thinking that for this contest, it should be “all in”. There are opportunities for the non-winners to grab gear already, so maybe the People’s Choice should truly be that-- and if it goes to the 1st place winner of one of the divisions, so be it!

That also means that you guys could be watching videos at the same time as waiting for the judges… instead of having to wait for the “winners” to be eliminated. Efficiency at its finest.

I know that feel.

tbh this contest looks like it’s gonna be better than a lot of contests in real life haha

Greg i could find a good home for that $2,444 dollars worth of prizes…

Haha, I bet you could!!

So, it’s the 18th. That means this weekend is almost over, with 2 more weekends to go (plus the weekdays that accompany them!).

If anybody thinks I’ve overestimated the ambition and filming/editing time available to the “Elders” of the community, I can extend the contest submission date by a bit. I wanted to be fair to the judges (who have already been waiting!) but I also want to make sure everybody who wants to enter will have a fair chance to enter.

If anybody else out there (I’ve had one concerned party contact me thus far) would use some extra time for good (getting a video done that they’re happy with) rather than evil (procrastinating 'til the last minute, in which case the actual submission date is irrelevant to you. This describes what I would do with extra time. ), it’s better to make that decision earlier rather than later to mitigate any negative feelings that might be held by people who are already busting their butts to meet the deadline.

I have no intentions of getting all flakey with submission dates, but revising the date for valid concerns is something I can live with.

Opinions?

I’m probably one of the laziest people I know and also have refined procrastination into an art. And even I don’t think you should change the submission date. I actually planned to do most of my “filming” next week, but I have no idea what I’m going to do. Should I just do a quick video of me standing there doing tricks? Should I add in all sorts of special effects with iMovie? Which music should I use as a soundtrack? I really don’t know yet. I don’t make up my own tricks, so you’re going to see a lot of old favorites, but what better for this old man to showcase? All I know is that it’s supposed to be fun, so I’m not going to psych myself out. I’m just going to have a good time and submit that.

Sounds great, Mike! I would personally be submitting a video of other people’s tricks, too, if I were competing.

Any other opinions on the date?

Prizes…

Been wanting to announce them for days, but there are just details getting sorted out. Since this is the official YYE discussion topic, I’ll tease a bit here for y’all. (current allotments-- I reserve the right to make arbitrary changes still!) The 1st-place packages are both worth over $300. The 2nd-place are worth over $200. Best video is going to be around $200. Best banger is sponsored by a particular company owner who loves bangers, so it’ll be a single wonderful yoyo. On top of that, one more random draw (to go with the fixe draws) and then to be honest I’m still pulling together a People’s Choice since it was a late-game addition. But there will be something!

I have received some early submissions, meaning at least a few of you are on your game! Do this thing!

FYI, I am pretty busy so my video might come in last minute. (Kids, work, hunting season, Utah Micro Jam, Fishing Trip, Halloween, kids, work, kids work…)

I imagine this is the going to be the case with quite a few of us.

I’ve been filming these past few weeks but not started editing yet. This will be my first yoyo video so I have no idea how it will turn out. However, I do not plan to miss this contest even if my video isn’t (or my tricks aren’t) great.

You could bump the due date one week and some of us would be happy but I’m not certain it is necessary.

Well…I’m out. Broke my index finger yesterday out riding my dirtbike. Needs pins… tut tut super bummed. Good luck to everyone submitting! I’ll be ready for next year!

Alright, in addition to the few here who have mentioned an extension being useful, I have received a few private messages pleading their cases, plus a non-contestant stakeholder who felt a bit longer would be a good idea.

We don’t want to drag it out forever, so we will extend it by a week and a day. Instead of the Sunday of that weekend, we’ll let you edit until the wee hours of Sunday if need be and then submit any time before 11:59 on Monday the 9th of November.

Thanks to those who have submitted early. At least it’s out of your hair!

Must… resist… procrastinating…

Yep, me too

Haha, I’m the WORST… good luck to you guys. Glad I don’t have that temptation this year.

Prize announcement!!

G Squared Yoyos have sponsored the “Best Banger” prize for this year’s contest. The inaugural “Best Banger” award, actually! They have offered up the beautiful Nessie attached to this post. MSRP was around $120, so this is a heck of a prize.

If you haven’t played a Nessie before, you’re in for a treat. It has a great nimble feel on the string, while still packing enough punch to see you through any of your combos. It’s a really great yoyo and this particular colourway is amazing.

Nothing special is needed to “enter”. When the judges spot a banger in your video that makes them sit up and take notice, they’ll keep track of it. Once all the entries are in, they’ll work together to narrow down the selection to one winner. You don’t need to do anything other than submit the video you were already planning to submit.

The best banger doesn’t need to be 1A… it can be singularly impressive and mind-blowing in any division.

Good luck!

Wow nice! That is a heck of a prize

And plays so good!

That almost makes me overcome my shyness of showing others my relatively lame throwing skills

You should do it. The original contest 3 years ago was to give the few “older” throwers of YYE a chance to lay down a video without feeling like we had to compete against the younger competition beasts!

It’s all in good fun. There have been entries of all skill levels!
