What are you throwing 2025?

‘Niche hobby’

Playing a musical instrument is a niche hobby? Haha. I used to play several but unfortunately can’t anymore.

i mean, yo-yos and teenage engineering op1/opz realm of synths and portable machines that go beep and boop?

i would say is sort of a niche combination

They make 47 million USD annually, they’ve had plenty of coverage from mainstream tech news outlets / influencers; they’re pretty much the Apple of synths. There is a gargantuan community for just their products, let alone synthesisers in general. Larger than the entire global yo-yoing community, most likely. Eurorack is more niche than standalone synths and even that has a larger community than yo-yoing because making music is something that is more accessible & appeals to pretty much everyone. While yo-yoing is pretty accessible, so it has a big potential market, it’s also not fun for everyone; meanwhile synths are even more accessible, and most people also enjoy performing or improvising music given the tools to do so—whistling, singing, instruments. Synths also can’t cause you sudden intense bodily harm (with the exception of poorly wired Eurorack cases), work for far longer without maintenance (no cleaning bearings with white spirits), are harder to damage during everyday use (you don’t expect to dangle them centimetres above concrete), and they let you feel a sense of fulfilment often without requiring much—or any—structured learning (have fun learning yo- from scratch with zero resources!). As someone with many Eurorack modules, I can say that the only way they may have harmed me is by introducing mercury into my home lmao. It’s a niche (i.e. a specialised segment of a market), but it’s not niche (i.e. without broad appeal or relatively obscure).

Well uhh…

LETS SEE THAT RACK!!!

I’m sorry, I’ll leave…

Edit to say: fascinated by eurorack, terrified of the rabbit hole involved in constructing a rack

It’s not so complicated. The dimensions are all informally standardised, so you can just get a case and whack stuff in based on what you wanna do with it.. Or you can build your own case, but that requires a bit more precision & dedication. The biggest rabbit hole will be your wallet after you’ve paid for a few modules lmao

That is more so what I meant, buying and building modules lol
