I don’t think yoyoing is that hard honestly. Partially because there is extremely limited competition so pushing yourself is tough, but also because its just not as hard to perfect as other things. I use tennis as an example. Getting to be what people consider “good” in tennis takes a ton more work than yoyoing.
As far as people considering you ‘good’, I’d say the difficulty is relative to the popularity. By that I mean people play tennis, people watch tennis. A lot of people know what good tennis looks like.
No one knows what good yoyoing looks like…I’ve been hearing “oh, you’re so good.” or “oh, I’d be all tangled up.” - since I was able to land a Split Bottom Mount.
In the end, what people consider good doesn’t really affect what’s good. I expect being ‘good’ at yoyoing takes the same amount of time and effort as anything else. Don’t judge your own skill based on the words of those who don’t know any better.
The reason I don’t think there’s gonne really be a boom is
a) it can be moderately expensive.
b) some people view it as a pretty nerdy hobby, and treat yoyos as child’s toys.
c) it takes a lot of practice and time to be good.
d) it’s no longer “cool” to yoyo like it was when the imperial was made. (this kind of correlates with b)
A: Yup. It can. It doesn’t have to but let’s face it, we’re blowing our money on this.
B: Pretty true. Although I never really saw a lot of nerdy people doing it in “my day”
C: This is pretty much the killer. It takes time, and people are impatient and have short attention spans. It takes practice and people are lazy. People want instant results and massive instant satisfaction. Video games let you mash buttons, yoyo requires a different set of skills.
D: Cool is a matter of “personal opinion”. Having had a deep seeded interest in this whole thing of yoyo, it’s cool to me.
The whole concept of actually having to make an effort to have fun seems to be off-putting to a lot of people. The barrier to entry really isn’t price, it’s willing to make a commitment and effort.
I’m curious to see more boom… I’ve gotten in habit of wearing my throw (of the day) on a belt clip. You get a few points, but one guy reached in his pocket and flashed what looked like a Supernova…
I think a big part of it is just being aware (as previously mentioned)… it’s like when you buy a certain shade of color car, because you hadn’t seen it, in the following week everyone’s driving that color (probably same make/model, too)… they were always there… I’m a Cubs fan, one of my favorite “games” is spot the Cubbie… watch a live event (maybe some WWE) and you’ll see a blue hat rocking the red “C” out there almost every time.
since the kids in my church have seen me (the pastor), my son or my littlest daughter throw - we’ve seen more yoyo’s… I was able to grab some YYF One’s and Whip’s to give away… we live in a small community, and people are taking notice… had one person at our little grocery store ask about all the yoyo’s in the church, I had to clarify they were talking about the toys and not the people…
That was ignorant. Anyone with the money can buy commercial time especially for counties (cheaper) as long as the channel approves it. Do you know what’s in Andres bank account?
On another note I can see yoyoing becoming like the fushigi ball or whatever where they scammed all the kids one Christmas showing commercials of people using that “magic ball” making it look easy. What the kids didn’t know was that is super hard to do and all the parents definitely got frustrated when they heard there kid dropping that heavy ball and smashing things with it trying to find the “magic”. If someone did this with yoyos with a commercial there might be some kids who pick it up and have the patience… watch the tutorial DVDs or go online. I could see them doing that with 5a. I think I have seen a duncan 5a commercial on youtube. Probably didn’t air long.
well with the whole cool think, I just meant that it’s not that “cool” thing to do. Like it’s not a popular fad. I personally think it’s quite cool. haha
As far as people saying it’s just that you notice it more once you pick something up, I’ve still yet to see anyone else who actually yoyos outside of meet ups or contests. I’ve seen one guy throwing an imperial up and down before, but that’s it.
Hahaha fushigi ball. Almost bought one but then realized I can use a regular tennis ball lmao. Btw the commercial is sweet. Any more out there? Any recent ones? I’ll YouTube it.
It’s hard to throw when I’m out at the mall pushing a stroller with 1 or 2 kids in it.(Depends on the stroller).
It’s hard to throw when shopping because I gotta deal with 4 screaming kids and I have to concentrate to find what I need to get.
Shopping isn’t a “leisure activity” for me, it’s a chore.
I don’t throw when I’m waiting at a restaurant, it’s usually too crowded. Similarly, so are most places I go to shop.
At home, I throw when I can. Inside, outside, I don’t care. Other than that, you’re right though: meets and contests. I still almost always have at least 1 yoyo on me at all times.
At SacAnime(my final one this year! Yay!) I saw some kid who thought he was “the man” because he at a Limelight he could throw up and down. I showed him double or nothing and split the atom and I guess his testicles ascended into his torso because I never saw that guy again the rest of the convention. Yoyos are banned from the rave because of injury issues, yet this other crap people do(like slam dancing, glow sticking and some other skill-type thing Toys R Us sells) are acceptable. At the same time, depending on what you’re doing, there’s a time and place for everything. Yoyo requires space, and crowds and yoyo do NOT get along very well unless the crowd is a yoyo contest or meet. Why? Because they get it!
Forcing back on topic:
I think the “boom” is arriving. I think the cycle is starting to hit. I’m seeing sales at the local toy store rise in regards to skill toys, including clearing out pegs of ProZ throws when I announced that they were at the store where I live. I mean, we go from the numbers I bought, then no movement, to “announcement and gone the next day”, and then I check in at least once a week and see that the pegs are being re-stocked and sold off on a regular basis. I mean, SOMEONE has to be buying this stuff. I know it isn’t just me!
