WIDE SHOT

I need a 4th shelf. I have another 20 miscellaneous yoyos in a bin in my closet (extra butterflies, imperials, spare parts or less utilized yoyos). There’s also about 30 or 40 that I’ve given away over time, usually proyos, Manta Rays, Butterfly XT’s, etc.

When I got into the hobby all I had was a Dark Magic II. Later I got an 888 and then stopped playing for a long while. Several yoyos got me back in at critical points by reviving interest in waves: the Plastic Fulvia, the Onedrop Terrarian, and then my big kick really started when I found an unreponsive Freehand outside a fortune-teller’s shop on my honeymoon (the Freehand 2 that I later bought was also a revelation). Then I got back into responsives through the yellow psychedelic butterfly I found at auction for 5$. This led to a wooden butterfly (with the yellow monster, 2nd shelf) that flipped my whole understanding of what I thought I liked in a yoyo.

Oh, and I should mention a tiny blue Butterfly sits atop the Throw Monkey on the second shelf, and that yoyo got me started on a kick of collecting every butterfly model that I could. Still looking for a duncan rainbow butterfly or a Mariposa that isn’t crazy expensive. At one point I did successfully purchase a reasonably priced Disney’s world of color butterfly, and it played great, but I gave it to a Disney fanatic / collector friend who was getting married.

I know I’m combining a few thread topics here, but while I’m on the subject, my top 5 (and some alternates, because…you know…)

  1. YYF Turbo Confusion (Dragonfly / Turbo Bumblebee)
  2. Onedrop Deepest State (Weekender / Little Confusion)
  3. TK No Jive (Profly / Wood Sparkle Butterfly)
  4. Duncan Freehand One (PLTPS / Freehand 2)
  5. Onedrop Laguna (Terrarian / Dark Magic 2)

I am left speechless. That does not happen often. Thanks for sharing that awesome collection. You are truly a servant of the hobby.

I just have terrible impulse control. I am a collector. Once i start something, i really want to finish it. At what point would my collection be “finished”? Probably never, lol. But thank you for kind words, and you are welcome! Someone made me realize that my collection would be better appreciated by the mnay, as opposed to the few. It doesnt make sense to build a massive collection and not show anyone.

Those sock organizers really are the best low cost yoyo shelves

The darker one is cracked a tad and leaves forward a little so I “roped” in the yo-yos to keep things from falling off

BEHOLD

I did some organization and storage so I laid all my throws out and snapped a pic. If you have any questions on what’s what just ask!

My collection has been a very intense spiritual battle between “reduce this collection, you idiot. So many yo-yos just sitting there…” and “buy more, collections are endless. Just a few more yo-yos, come on!”

I can’t stop thinking about this… you rate the confusion and dragonfly as almost the same level? So intrigued. I recently got the confusion and love it. Really feel its worth its weight. I really dislike the butterfly xt (or just can’t figure it out) and kind of thought the dragonfly was an upgrade of the b’fly. That is, can you elaborate on ranking them on the same level? Thank you!

Turbo confusion is just a metal dragonfly. So yes, I rank them very similarly. The metal one is more consistent, has the poles for pull starts or hubstacks, and the rim for grinds or pullstarts, as well as a fantastic finish for tape measures and the like. So it has an edge, but the clear red plastic dragonfly I have just has a magic feel to it you can’t get with metal.

They share a response system and both have A bearings for an axle. Although, since acquiring the bumblebee spare axles, I’ve thrown the wooden spindle axle into my dragonfly to essentially convert it to a Profly but with cork response ( really digging that!)

The butterfly xt is really good when you break it in and wear the lube in the bearing down a bit and you keep a constant tension (no slack ) in that string during play. But you have a point about it. Let me tell you the big secret about butterfly xt’s… The OG clear XTs are the better ones. Bought a few and can’t to back to the newer ones. Unfortunately the new versions do have an upgraded wall ratio so they hold their stalls a little bit better, but otherwise I prefer the older XTs. Their starburst isn’t as intrusive so you can regulate response with the bearing and your technique a bit more. Plus translucent plastic is where it’s at. I don’t even know why they make opaque plastic kinds of yoyos… Pfft :smiling_face_with_sunglasses::saluting_face:
