Should one of the big brands try to release a competitive plastic for under $10?

Because the word ‘competitive’ doesn’t go together with ‘cheap’.
Being competitive basically means you need something with no compromise, since the goal is to win you need every advantage you can get, and it costs something. When you design a yoyo with cheapness in mind, you will need to compromise; less material, lower quality material, cutting corners, and the result will not be the best you can use to win.
There is no ‘cheap race cars’ for the same reason, it’s either a cheap car or a race car.

They won’t make enough money to pay off the money spent on research and development as it is very hard to experiment with materials cheap enough and make a yoyo good enough for competition.
