As I’m window shopping on YYE I decided to take a gander at One Drop’s offerings, and since I already have a Terrarian I paid attention to their Side Effect models. One that caught my eye was the second gen 54, mainly because it has a better value, shipping with two pairs of SEs instead of one.
My only concern is that it will play too similar to the Terrarian since they have a similar width and cup. I want to really see what OD is all about. I’ve had a delightful appetizer with the Terrarian, now I’d like some suggestions on the main course.
So, should I lock in with the 54, since it represents a good piece of the company’s history? Or is the hype overstated? Is it a yoyo that reminds one of “the good old days,” but doesn’t play as well as a yoyo that is much cheaper and just as cool? Is there another OD yoyo that can really show me what they are about, or is this it?
I’ve tried neither one. Someone else has though and they will definitely help you out.
But let me take a moment to strongly recommend the Onedrop M2. If you had an M1 back in the day, they modernized it in the classiest way possible in my opinion, the perfect mesh of performance and nostalgia, at a price that honors what the M1 was all about. And it fits in your pocket like a glove, not evasive in any way. Take the cash saved and toss it towards a Deep State and I truly feel you will see what Onedrop is all about, at least in my eyes.
I haven’t played my Terrarians all that much, but I LOVE my 54 gen 2. One of the best ODs, in my opinion. I can’t imagine you’d ever be upset having one in your collection
To my eye, the Terrarian and 54 Gen 2 cups are quite different. The 54 Gen 2 has much more material at the rim. Given the similar base weights, the makes their distributions different too.
I have both and it honestly didn’t occur to me that they could have significant overlap, but I have spent far more time with the Terrarian, so maybe my perception is skewed.
If you want something with even more history than Terrarian, Rebirth is on stock. (And it has projection profile grooves!)
But if you want variety, I second the M2 (also a great value) or the DS-61 or Artifact. IMO, OD tapped axle yo-yos are underrated.
its probably a top 3 or 4 onedrop for me (i have 8)
it’s reasonably stable, comfortable to catch and throw, the width and diameter help with chopstick and whips a lot and it and feels really solidly made
if you like the look of it i doubt it’ll dissapoint you
of course it doesn’t t play like a competition bi metal, but its really nice anyway, especially with the brass side effects in (which slows it down a fair bit)
i dont have a terarian, but i will say it certainly doesnt play like just the other one drops i have.
