Need help with 5a double or nothing

I can’t consistently hit a 5a double or nothing (where u curl your finger inward) i always seem to land the yoyo on all strings or the back string, never in the trapeze. Any tips on how straighten out the yoyo to hit the trick more consistently? my attempt

Like all trapezes, the string will wrap around the finger by angle of incidence and angle of reflection. That is, the angle it enters is the angle it exits from the normal (the perpendicular to the finger). Same as a billiard ball caroming off a cushion, same as light bouncing off a mirror. Think of the string as a single ray.

You can control this by the angle of origin, and the angle your receiving finger is at. Easiest to set it up such that the receiving finger only has to be perpendicular to the incoming string.

It seems like you have the 5a part down good enough so it’s just the landing. The mechanics of landing the mount is the same as 1a DoN. If a beginner came to you and showed you that issue and said they’re always landing on all strings what would you say?

You would realize they likely either aren’t separating the strings on their NTH enough or aren’t keeping the yoyo close enough to their pointer finger when landing the mount making landing correctly more difficult.

It’s hard to tell from your video but it seems like it’s the former where you aren’t keeping the strings separated enough. For practice, try pausing right before the mount and see how everything looks, then mount. Do this for a bit and you’ll get more comfortable with it and also be able to troubleshoot better.

The mechanics of landing the mount is really the same as a 1a DoN so just think of it from that lens and I’m sure you can figure out what the problem is, like if you were troubleshooting someone having trouble with 1a DoN.
