I don’t know why I didn’t think of this when quoting doctor seuss earlier but I woke up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and wrote down “ham counterweight”
I write down the most random things in the middle of the night… Once I wrote ‘The bright Salix wistfully implores; draped in gossamer’s veil.’ And another time, I wrote ‘plasric jigsaw puzzle.’ (With the typo)
Perfect!
Could you (would you) sell them at Yoyo Sam (I am)?
I would not, could not sell them to the Sam.
That’s freaking awesome, good job
Amazing. I always wondered if both the eggs and ham were green, and now we know.
Yall see gentry big yoyo
I actually referenced my kids book in order to maintain lore accuracy.
I bet @AudreySickburn could make a better yoyo at that size tbh
Hey can’t even throw it! What’s the point? lol. Go functional or go home.
I’ve been considering making a giant yoyo with skate bearings….
The question is, who will make it first? You or @AtomicChessGuy ???
I could see @MinerJ consider making it or @TryCatchThrow fiddling with an idea
I was recently commissioned to design a yoyo which:
- Could be 3D printed
- Uses Cabal guts
- Feels and plays as close to the RSO The End Part II as possible
The Yes, Absolutely guys intended to follow up The End with The Middle and The Beginning, but that hasn’t happened (yet). A printed version of a moderately popular 7068 aluminum yoyo will be inferior in some ways to the original, and the Matt Mullins Razorback Academy video cracked me up, so I thought calling this “The Mid” felt appropriate.
To get similar weight distribution to machined 7068 aluminum, I had to incorporate metal infused filaments on the rims (copper and steel). These metal filaments look a lot nicer if they’re sanded a bit to expose the metal flakes inside the plastic, so I dragged my wood lathe out of storage and cobbled together a way to chuck up the yoyo halves to sand them.
I think the person who commissioned these will chime in about how they play, but overall I think they came out pretty good. The first few attempts were a bit lighter than the target weight of 65.5g, and definitely feel a bit too light on the string IMO. The two that came out at 65.6g and 66.7g felt the best to me.
Edited to tag @DocPop
Man, that ain’t no Mid lol, bet that’s some
Those look awesome, and a wonderful homage to one of the best unresponsive throws ever made imo
I did this but my bearing was also printed and it was terrible.
I’ve got an assortment of cheap skate bearings and some premium ones from back when I could skate.
I was actually going to take the wheels directly off my longboard that I can’t use anymore and turn them into a yoyo but it turns out longboard wheels are heaaaavy.
First skate bearing yoyo attempt is gonna be 3d modeled and printed longboard wheels to take it down below the 300 grams the real wheels were lol.
second skate bearing Yoyo is gonna be something massive. Minimum 100 mm diameter, maybe bigger and it’s gonna use macrame cord for string.
I’ve thought about doing a huge yoyo for a long time and even have some designs but it would be hard to get working with any standard yoyo bearings and with the size it would be quite expensive as well.
I still think maybe someday but I’m not sure. As @AudreySickburn said I would want it to be usable unlike Gentry’s but striking that happy medium while functioning well and not costing 100s of dollars I think would be tough.
