I’m considering turning a Kendama soon.
My question is; what design conventions are necessary for a good, functional Kendama?

This probably isn’t the best audience to answer your question. While I love to play kendama, I am not well-versed in the design aspects of the ken. Most kendamas are not hand turned.
Maybe consider messaging Evo Kendamas on IG. They have some great shapes and do a lot of hand turned custom kens.
