Do you have to pay to register for nats if you are seeded into semifinals?

Since we are now seeding from State contests as well, we’re going to be doing away with the petitions except in very extraordinary circumstances. To my knowledge, we have only accepted one petition this year.

How do you have to place at states to get in?

1st… or second or third at bigger contests.

Would you consider it an extraordinary circumstance if I slip you a 20 before the contest? ::slight_smile: For real though, do you know why they changed it from petitioning to being qualified from states?

We’re basically doing away with petitions altogether. It was a terrible, flawed system for qualifying people and it caused more problems than it solved.

We’re now qualifying from NYYL-sanctioned State contests as well as allowing past champs to qualify automatically. Our hope for this is two-fold: make sure the top talent is on that stage, and secondly we want to encourage high-level players to judge at the State & Regional level. If the Top Three from every division at Nationals are automatically qualified for next year, that means they can judge their Regional instead of competing in it, which helps organizers A LOT. As long as they hold on to that Top Three the next year, they can stay qualified while keeping themselves open to judge and help out at the lower levels of competition.

Doesn’t that lower the amount of people that make it from prelims a lot? Because that’s an extra two people seeded.

Not necessarily. “Seeded” doesn’t mean “showing up”. Typically, a fair number of people who could compete at Nationals don’t attend.

But it’s something we are paying attention to, and will adjust the number of players who are allowed through to Finals if we feel it needs to happen.

Ok, that makes sense.

Double checking on costs (two questions):

If you win/place top three at a NYYL sanctioned regional contest the entry fee is $90? ;

by winning/placing in the top three at a regional contest you bypass the preliminary round?

Top 5 are qualified to the only round before finals, semifinals, or prelims if you like.
