Contest Newbie

I would love to go to a yoyo contest/gathering at some point. Do different contests or gatherings have different vibes? Do any tend to have more 0a, modern responsive stuff happening? Which are most fun for someone who isn’t going to compete, but just wants to have a good time hanging out with other yoyoers, watch performances, and soak in the scene. Just checking out my options.

Midwest Regionals is happening in a few days at Mall of America.

There’s also this pre-event hangout you could go to. I believe Dazzling Dave is hosting this, so there should be plenty of spintop and responsive yoyo enthusiasts there.

I guess this is kind of short notice, but it’s free to attend and you’ll probably make some new friends if you go.

Different contests can have “different vibes” depending on the crowd who shows up (whether you know anyone or not, what competitors’ styles and overall vibes are, what play styles are popular for your contest’s area, region, division, etc.). It’s tons of fun regardless, unless you’re there against your will ofc, with vendor booths and often a few well-known yoyo pros showing up to the event and even competing.

My experience is that 0a is not too popular among general yoyo competition audiences (though you WILL still find some 0a throwers showing up to contests—i tend to favor throwing 0a at events just bc it saves space and the event hall or place is usually crowded).

Usually it’s whatever tricks and tech that’s popular that you will find in abundance—kids and newer throwers tend to gravitate toward the flashy and points-getting stuff they learn from social media or youtube, then develop a style or their own vibe over time.

Meet-ups are a bit different, but again still cool. It depends on the crowd, but you will find a wide range of throwers at these, from newbies who just saw a video with a dude throwing a really cool trick, yoyo collectors looking to bst all the cool stuff, to the pros who live in your area coming to the event to share their love of the sport, to the old guys who used to be yoyo champions in school and have kept up with modern tricks in their spare time just for fun.

You will probably hear this a lot on here, but contests and meet-ups are a good way to meet other yoyo people, share and learn new yoyo stuff, and keep hip with the yoyo youths (if you’re chasing that tiktok following lol).

I am the same, but there does not seem to be any contest in Australia.
